I can't answer for the IRT, IND, or BMT East, but what I CAN say is that the Broadway BMT (EE, N, RR)and most of the Southern division (except the Brighton) wasn't fully capable of handling 10-car trains yet. This was around the time when the platforms were being lengthened, and the station walls were being tiled over with that 'refrigerator' type tilework. As far as the others, I guess this is all the demand called for. The B went to 10 cars in 1986 when the 6th Ave. side of the Manhattan Bridge closed, and the N & R didn't go to 10 cars till November 1987. Randyo or Larry RedbirdR33 could probably elaborate on this. |

Many of the BMT platforms were not lengthend to 600 feet until some years after the opening of the Chrystie Street subway in November 1967. I'll try to dig out the information on the platform lengthening and post in tomorrow.Larry, RedbirdR33 |

I seem to recall that well into the 1970s all BMT lines (except N train with R-46) had 480 ft trains.Never knew the AA operated with 8-car trains before it became the K. I always remember it with 4-car trains. |

I'm very surprised at those of you who claim to be serious railway historians and are unfamiliar with the various car services of ALL NYCT lines. Rush hour AA/B service ran 8 car trains at all times until the double letters were eliminated and the AA became the K. |

For me, it is just in the 1970's and early 1980's when I did some serious subway roaming about, I naturally understood that the J, KK, M and LL trains were 8 cars in length. Plenty of times, I went well out of my way to travel these and other lines. I do remember that many routes had 8 car trains, and some routes had 9 like the #3, and 10 car trains. And this was before and during the time of the 4 and 5-car mid-day and night time budget cut reductions in train sizes.Mike |

I remember seeing 4-car AA trains on Saturdays in the fall of 1967 as well as 8-car AA trains as Christmas drew near. The R-32s took over base service after Chrystie St. |
