Crush loaded LA blue line train

Blue line trains this weekend and the next three are running at 30 minute headways all day because they are working on the tracks to tie in with the new Expo line. Trains are normally standing room only at 12 minute headways, so I expected the worst. But it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. It was crowded, but not ridiculously so. I was in the last car and the first two cars were much more crowded, but only a few people at 2 or 3 stations weren't able to board and had they been aware that the next train was 30 minutes behind us, I'm sure that they would have squeezed on.

This next pic was supposed to be a video, but I had my camera on the wrong setting. So I'm standing there holding the camera thinking it was a video...lol

lol! In fact that is much worse!

The one thing that you can't see in my pic however is that there are several bikes in there that you can't see. That's why there aren't more people squeezed in. The bikes are blocking the door and the aisle.

Good to see that ... I'd gotten the impression that the red line was largely empty and the only regular riders were the crew ... and a cast of screaming extras. :)

That's the red line. And IMO the blue line is more crowded on Saturdays than weekdays because they only run 5 tph all day. On weekdays the trains are full at rush hour, but most people get a seat.

lol. The red line is pretty much like a regular Metro anywhere in the world except that trains aren't too frequent. The ridership is about 10k people per mile which is a little ahead of the WMATA average and well ahead of the CTA.

Who the HELL at MTA writes the destinations for the Red Line car signs?!? "NOR HOLLYWD"?! I realize that Breda stuck them with a cheesy-ass Luminator sign with only 12 positions, but seems to me that "N HOLLYWOOD" would work better. Almost as bad as "WIL/WESTERN". I guess as the Purple Line is extended west, we can look forward to "WIL/FAIRFAX", "BEVRLY HLLS", "CENTURY CTY", etc.

the one good thing about being super fat is that i just push and they move :)

Is the Expo Line that close to opening, or is this just preliminary trackwork?

With all my riding being on weekends, I've never seen less than 20 people in a car on the section from Hollywood-Highland to 7th/Metro Center, and it is not uncommon for all the seats to be taken.

The latter, Expo line won't be opening until some time next year. I think what is being done (I haven't checked the Expo Line threads at the Transit Coalition boards is the connection from the exisiting Blue Line to the Expo Line at Washington Blvd & Flower St, south of downtown L. A.

Probably some retired TA workers who moved west and went to work for LACMTA to enhance their pensions !
