Did The (DD) Briefly Run In 1962? |
|
|
Posted by Union Turnpike on Sun Jan 31 20:39:31 2010 According to this interesting subway website: http://www.robkopolovicz.com/ind.html there briefly was a (DD) in 1962.The (DD) ran from December 7, 1962 until Christmas Eve 1962 due to a water main break. This would've been a Concourse-Sixth Avenue Local. Would the R1-R9s actually have displayed (DD) during these 17 days? Also on a side note, the webmaster mentions about the Second Avenue subway possibly connecting with the Pelham Bay Line and being served by the (T)(Q) and (V) trains after 2014. |

They had all single letter and double letter route signs - even an FF that has never been officially used.I personally have seen R-27/30 D trains signed DD. |

So the temporary (DD) ran in conjunction with an emergency (C) during those 17 days in 1962? Would anyone know how Concourse/Saint Avenue service was and where the water main break occurred that caused this? |

The (C) ran via Sixth Avenue, the (DD) ran via Eighth Avenue and Houston Street and the Sixth Avenue IND was closed between 34th Street and West 4th Street. So we had (A)(BB)(C)(CC)(DD) during those seventeen days? |

And during the 2009 vintage holiday train of R-1/9's, each of the side route roll sign boxes on R-7A #1575 was signed up as a "Queens-6th Av.Lcl.", in essence like an "FF" per se. The other R-1/9's were signed up simply as "S|Special".-William A. Padron ["MM|Av. of Americas Local", seen on side route sign for IND R-7/9's assigned to BMT Eastern Division] |

Here's an undated version of my original post from way back when. The Sixth Avenue Water-main Break of 1962 During the early morning hours of December 7, 1962 a water-main located at 18th Street and Sixth Avenue ruptured and flooded the tracks of the Sixth Avenue Lines of both the IND Division and PATH. Subway service was suspended between 34th Street-Herald Square and West 4 Street. PATH service was suspended between 33rd Street and Hoboken. The following emergency services were placed into effect. Routes A,E,GG and HH operated normally. Route AA 8th Avenue Local would continue to operate between 168th Street Broadway and Hudson Terminal (todays World Trade Center), but would run only during the rush hours. Route BB 6th Avenue Local continued to operate between 168th Street Broadway and 34th Street 6th Avenue but would operate during non-rush hours only. Route C 8th Avenue Express would operate between Bedford Park Boulevard and 34th Street 6th Avenue during rush hours and running express on the Grand Concourse Line in the direction of traffic and in both directions on the Eighth Avenue Line between 145th Street and 59th Street. Route CC 8th Avenue Local was suspended. Route D 6th Avenue Express continued to operate between 205th Street and Coney Island (Via the Rutgers Street Tunnel) but would operate during non-rush hours only running via the local tracks of the Eighth Avenue Line between 59th Street and West 4th Street. This service would operate express between 145th Street and 59th Street. Route DD 6th Avenue Local would operate between 205th Street and Coney Island (Via the Rutgers Street Tunnel) during rush hours only running via the local tracks of the Eighth Avenue Line between 59th Street and West 4th Street. Route F 6th Avenue Express operated between 179th Street Jamaica and 34th Street 6th Avenue (Via the 53 Street Tunnel) at all times. It was the first time that the C had operated since 1949 and the first and only time that the DD ever ran. A nice early Christmas present for rail-fans of the day. Normal service was restored on December 24, 1962. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Nah, I think the V would have been the FF back in those days, not DD. The current B train fits more as a DD.They even used the single G for a SHORT period in 1964. |

Chris: I think that men were just as aware of big boobs back in those days as they are now, but I don't know if "DD" was included in the lexicon. It was a more innocent time. There was only one problem with the designations that were used during that period. They were WRONG!!! "DD" was erroneously used on trains operating on 8 Ave when the D/DD combination is meant for 6 Ave. The C was erroneously used for trains operating on 8 Ave even though the C/CC combination is meant for trains operating on 8 Ave. The TA should called the 205 - Stl via 8 Ave local service a "CC" and kept the"D" designation for the Bed Pk - 34/6 express service. |

But since it was on a regular "QJ" run, it was improperly signed...R-7 #1428 (with "MM" Route Sign) & R-9 #1786 - Cypress Hills, BMT Jamaica Line, 12/3/1972. -William A. Padron ["MM - Sixth Av. Local", seen on color-coded side route sign R-16/32 as green] |
