Future Car assignment for C train

Any idea what will run on the C when the R-32 is retired? Will it be R-44's and R-179 to the A?

When the (C) goes full-length, it will use R32s and R46s. When the R32s are gone, the (C) will be all-R46.

lrg5784 is right and don't even think about the R179's yet. It hasn't even been ordered yet.

Thank you. From what I've been hearing though, the R179 order may just be exclusive to Staten Island only but I'm not going to jump the gun just yet.

No I wouldn't jump the gun either. There seems to be much speculation. I heard what you said, but heard that it will replace all R44's (NYCT & SIR) and all R46's. I also heard it may not have the # R179. I think we all need to take a breath and wait and see.

Whilst the R46s are pretty sound still (except for the occasional squeak from the undercarriage) - I'm not so sure if the R44 will make it through to the end of the string. Consider #5342 - shake, rattle and roll all the way across the flats - just like R10 #2974 did back in the late 80's. More loose nuts & bolts than a hardware store.

I dont mean to get on you but won't the Brightliners be long gone by the time the purported R179 shows up? I would have to say the 46s would be the most logical of choices. Although I think they will look ridiculous on the C.

Here's my guess and mind you, it's only a guess. In January of 2010, the R-46s will begin to migrate to the (C) from Jamaica's fleet while the R-32s from the (C) are moved back to Jamaica. I would guess that 172 R-46s will be assigned to the (C) line. The other guess is that Jamaica will continue to receive R-160 Option II cars and as they do, R-32s will be reefed until gone.

R-44s will remain on the (A) until perhaps mid-2011 when a 3rd option of R-160s begin to arrive. The R-44s will then be scrapped. THe SIRR cars will remain until 2015 when R-179s arrive. Depending on the size of the order, some R-46s may also be replaced.

For a while, the (C) will have both R-32s and R-46s. The first R-32s to go will be the R-32s on the (A) line. Beyond that, R-32s will run as 10 car trains on the (C) while the R-46s migrate over. Once 5 R-46 trains are running on the (C) it will be a 1 train for 1 train swap until 172 R-46s are in place and then all R-32s will be removed.

The R-32s started on the Brighton Express (Q) when they were first delivered in 1964 and eventually made their way to the Sea Beach (N) and West End (T, TT). Just before the Chrystie St merger in 1967 they started showing up on the D and after the Chrystie merger they were on the AA/B, D and N. By 1969 the car equipment problem was such that they showed up on just about ant BMT/IND line often in mixed trains with other equipment. Toward the end of the 1970s and the early 1980s, they started showing up on the RR. Through the 1980s, they were pretty much the backbone of the AA/B, D, N and RR. In the mid 1980s, the TA began to aggressively do away with the double letter train designations and the AA briefly became the K which had been used for the Bway Bkln/6 Av lcls before that.

Starting next week (approx. December 11) each newly-accepted R-160 at Jamaica will free up one train of R-46's for redeployment.

The two remaining trains of Phase I R-32's at Jamaica are now extraneous to service needs (a safety cushion) and could be withdrawn anytime. There is currently a balancing act in progress where B/O pair(s) get cycled out of the active train sets each week, held as reserve and reactivated if and when another pair goes down. How much longer this will continue is uncertain.

FWIW, I'd have to express doubts about the R-32's going back through Jamaica to die off. As the rest of the R-160's come in at Jamaica (as of December 1, there are still 240 cars, 24 10-car trains, left to be accepted, all to Jamaica) there will be plenty of R-46's to go around. If 172 R-46's are needed for the C that's 21 of those 24, so there will still be other R-46's left over for the F (maybe), R and V lines. Jamaica probably wouldn't really need 60-foot SMEE's to fill its schedules [unless 1) there is a desire to change over the C line in a hurry, or 2) an unexpected delay in deliveries]. In point of fact, there are just a handful of R-46's now remaining on the F during off-peak times, no more than a half-dozen. If Alstom and KRC maintain their present pace, this all should unfold by the middle of June or thereabouts.

It promises to be an interesting winter and spring.

As for the R-160 Option III, Alstom and Kawasaki are both claiming ignorance thus far on the subject. Assuming Kawasaki remains a production partner and supplier to Alstom, the primary contractor (at Alstom's adjusted 2002 prices), there is a minimum lag of 18 to 24 months from Notice To Proceed before the first deliveries could be expected. That's how the R-142S (7731-7810) IRT addition went in 2002-2004 as well. It all depends on how soon MTA signs on the dotted line, if there even is one. This extrapalates a retirement timeline for the R-44's into the second half of 2012 at the earliest.

Regards,

George Chiasson Jr.
