Cell Phone Service @ 168th St on the (1)...

Today the weirdest thing happened. I was shooting photos at 168th St on the 1 platform and my cell phone started ringing. It was my mom and she is a "chatty cathy." Im on the phone telling my mother I am in the subway and I will call her back. She continued to talk and I was still dumbfounded that I got this call. The train shows up and I figure ok Im gonna loose signal and she'll get the point since I couldn't get a word in edgewise. Needless to say my phone never completely lost service and the convo, though the signal bar sputtered between a bar and no bar, held until I got off at 225th. My carrier is Verizon Wireless, has this werid shit happened to anyone else in the system where you know good and well your phone shouldn't be ringing?

Trevor

That's amazing; usually tunnels (whether entering in or traveling through) spell doom for my cell phone reception.

My carrier is also Verizon Wireless; I've received similar reception (no bars or one bar) at Queens Plaza, West 4 Street, parts of 23 St - Ely Ave (nearest to the exit points but still underground), and the Atlantic Ave - Pacific St transfer area.

That's amazing. Usually you'd find reception with any phone carrier at most of the older stations (e.g. the original IRT subway) because they are so close to the ground.

I also have Verizon. And if I can get at least a weak, one bar signal, it will usually hold onto it for dear life.

Yup the shuttle platform is a particularly interesting place for phone service for me, as I get service right near the Track 3 bumper block, but go a little further into the station and no service.

Perhaps the signal sneaks through because of all the broken steel & re-rod that also lets the ceiling fall down.

This musta been a fluke or something, there are a few other spots in the system I've gotten phone calls that I just couldn't believe I got calls.

I know they were once talking about wiring the system for cell use. Have we progressed any, I didn't really keep up with that campaign after the initial talk about it.

Hm.

I remember getting cell service in the Hudson River tubes. The power had just gone out and I managed to call my mother to ask her if she had power and if there was any sort of widespread outage.

It's happened to me at times. Other than Atlantic-Pacific, its happened at 34 St-Herald Square, Prince St, DeKalb Av, Jamaica-Van Wyck, and once carried a convo from 21 St-Queensbridge to right before Roosevelt Av. Sadly, this doesn't happen often. My carrier is AT&T.

You must have a great phone too!

Verizon supposedly has a contract with MTA in Antenna service I know for a fact with LIRR at Penn! I wouldn't be surprised if the same applies with the subway too! I have Verizon also!

It could be remotely possible that the RR's catenary wires which eventually come out into the open might have acted as an antenna to carry the cell phone signals. Something similar could actually be taking place in areas of the subway system as well. Some piece of conductive material nearby, possibly even the train radio antenna cable in the tunnels, may be assisting the transmission and reception of the cell phone signals.

I had to wait their once and I think I figured out why. If you look toward the ceiling against the wall beyond the bumper block, you can see what I think is the actual sidewalk directly above you. Since that's probably the only place where the ceiling is that thin, that's why cell phone signals get through.
