Wyckoff Ave Bend |
|
|
Posted by GP38/R42 Chris on Thu Nov 19 14:15:41 2009 Here's a great old photo of the Wyckoff Ave Bend at Palmetto St and Myrtle. This is when the el ended at Wyckoff Ave, and used to continue a couple hundred feet further up Myrtle Ave than it does now, before bending around the building at the corner of Myrtle and Wyckoff, and going down it's incline down to the surface before going back in alignment onto the surface of Palmetto St, and into the Lutheran ROW, the el is now on.The el is being constructed over Palmetto St in the photo. This is looking towards the Seneca Ave station on Palmetto St from Myrtle: http://www.queenspix.com/ridgewood/wyckoffavenuestation1914.jpg |

This is Cypress Ave near Palmetto St. The current el would be to the right. The train is coming down the incline in the location of what became the "Ridgewood Grove" arena, and is now a huge Chinese Buffet, you can see from the el.

Yes, that is odd.By the way, also....the attractive building on the corner (now gone) was originally the "Bushwick Terminal Station" building for the old Lutheran Steam Railway, which originally opened the line from Myrtle/Wyckoff to Metropolitan Ave. |

From circumstantial evidence (so far) I believe the photo shows construction of an interim elevated structure that existed between 1914 and about 1926 or 1927. In the recent book "the BMT" much was made of a "temporary connection" from the Myrtle Ave. El extension to the rebuilt structure at Wyckoff Ave. station. The reason is there was another elevated line for the 14 St.-Eastern route that was planned along Wyckoff Ave. I am not sure if its intersection with Myrtle was to be at grade or on a fly over, but the idea was to add more trackage later when the 14 St.-Eastern line was actually built. As it turned out (obviously), politics dictated that the 14 St.-Eastern was actually built as a subway all the way to Broadway Junction, so there never was a crossing with the Myrtle Ave. El. When the subway was under construction (1925-1928) the permanent link was installed from Myrtle Ave. onto Palmetto St., most likely including the middle track. In the 1914-1927 (?) period, I believe the layout had trains continuing to use the former ramp right-of-way around the building at the corner of Myrtle & Palmetto, then cross onto the new structure at St. Nicholas Ave. The piece above Palmetto from St. Nicholas to Myrtle may not have been in use until the permanent structure was erected. Like I say, it's all very sketchy so far, so if anyone has additional info it would be greatly appreciated, but that appears to be the story. Regards, George Chiasson Jr. (Widecab5@aol.com) |

There is something very interesting that did go on here, as you are correct, the Canarsie line was supposed to be an el over Wyckoff Ave as originally planned. That also had something to do with why the Myrtle line from Broadway to Wyckoff was built as a local/express configuration, probably in anticipation of traffic fro the Canarsie line too. The tower at Wyckoff also had something to do with that original plan. You are also right, the original layout (prior to the northern end of the el) had the train pass over Palmetto, and around that building with the cupola. and then slowly down a ramp next to palmetto St, and finally meeting Palmetto St around Cypress Ave. I don't know anything about a "temporary" connection, as youmentioned, but I am curious if you ever hear anything more. |
