One of those vendors came in very handy last year. I was headed home but had allowed myself to become extremely dehydrated. Fortunately I got off at one of the stations that had a vendor on the platform and bought some water. I gulped it down and then bought another to take with me on the train because I was still thirsty. |

They would only get business from transferring customers, as few would pay a fare just go and eat there, and even then, most would be prefer to eat before or after riding the subway. Why linger in a subway station when you can get to your home station and eat there? I guess it might work for those whose home stations are in entirely residential areas (eg Beverley Road), but what percentage do you think there are of those? |

The LION always used to grab and run from such places. Hot Dogs are particularly fine finger foods, as are hamburgers, fishburgers, chickenburgers, and TUNABURGERS! The fresh donuts were oh so good, do you remember those from 59th and Lex? Packaged foods like candy and Ice Cream (cones and bars)are good.Yeah, so they will eat these things on the trains. If all they leave behind is litter and not food scraps, we come out ahead on this project. Really, how hard is it for a car cleaner to go through the cars with a 5' drag mop. The income from the leases will pay for the car cleaning, and there are already trash recepticals on the platforms. ROAR |

If we want to be hypertechnical (and we are dealing with rules and regulations--law), it does say "liquid" and not "beverage," so I think some things we eat, like stews, would be covered. From reading the rules, the MTA does not want passengers spilling liquids on each other and in the system. It doesn't seem to matter if the liquid is drinkable, edible, or neither. |

I honestly think that the standards to which you want to place upon the subway are extremely draconian. We live in the filthiest, nastiest city in the world. We can try to contain the vandalism, litter, and petty crimes like walking between the cars, but people are still going to do it. It's impossible to keep up with every single minute detail. We might as well scrub the grime and steel dust off the tunnel walls while we're at it.And your problem's not with all cups of coffee, correct? The brand-names like Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts are pretty good with the lids. We can't ban coffee altogether. People, especially in New York, need their caffeine. |

But imagine if we did impose those regulations. IF we reach for the sky and perfection, we will naturally fall short due to the reasons you mentioned. But if we just let everything slide and we have a much lower bar, then ultimately the system will again go back to the dark days of the 70's& 80's. Remember no one thought that you could really have graffiti-free trains. Remember the schemes like painting them white etc. Nothing worked. Then a comprehensive multifaceted plan was implemented by David Gunn and mission was acomplished on 5/12/89. The point is anything can be done with perserverence. Remember how filthy Times Square was. Now it is spotless. |
