R-32,38,40,42,44,46,62,68,142,143,160?? |

Posted by rbseabeach on Wed Nov 18 19:42:12 2009 Why did the numbering system go from R-62 to R-142 on the IRT and R-68 to R-143 on the BMT, Is there a reason they chose not to use numbers in the 70's 80's 90's 100's etc. I even remember when the R-110 came out in 1992, why the jump in the numbering system? |

The other contract numbers were already being used for things like work cars, work car overhauls, etc. There is a gap of almost 15 years between the R68 and the R142, and the added time leads to more buildup of work car orders and other Revenue contracts. |

I wonder if they are also using R numbers for more types of contracts than they did back in the earlier days. For example in the period 1930-1975 the R numbers are virtually sequential and with the exception of very few skips. The period 1980-2010. During those 45 years I count approximately 35 car types and the numbers ran from R-1 through R-46. In the 35 years since there have been only 5 car types and there has been an explosion of over 100 R-numbers. Did the MTA at some point decide to use the sequence for many more types of contracts than the sequence was originally intended or used for? |

Its intersting that no "R" number was ever assigned for the purchase of the Speno Rail Grinder or the Sperry Rail Car.Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Well the Sperry is being leased to the MTA, isn't it? Of course there wouldn't be a contract number for the Sperry, because the TA never requested a contract for a car like the Sperry to be made. |

Thanks - and yes I have seen it but I was just wondering if the original intended usage changed as there seems to be an explosion of R-contracts after 1980, compared to before 1980. Did similar contracts exist before 1975 only that they were not assigned R numbers back then? |
