Posted by ChicagoPCCLCars on Tue Oct 13 19:02:45 2009  Shot from the Bryn Marw platform on the Red line, the first married pair of the CTA's new 5000 series featuring AC traction motors rests on north side's track number one. The cars had been running back and forth between two stations with the supervisor at track level in the middle, so I assume they were testing emergency stopping with a portable track trip. The Bombardier built cars are deliberately designed clones of the 3200 series design.  Some of the first tests seemed to be full service stops. Here the test cars get underway, only to stop again. The north car, 5011 was carrying the team of researchers with their battery of lap tops.  Caught in action from a southbound Red line train, the LED display doesn't seem to be turned on. Later it did read, "Not In Service" but the signage isn't as bright as those on CTA buses. My vote...bring back the roll signs.  This is how the day began, an eight car drag went to Skokie Shops from Howard Yard to pick up the 5000s. The eight cars would be split in half and two deuces would be the horses used to drag the 5000s to the tests. The other two deuces would serve as buffers. They went through this process as insurance against the untested cars breaking down and fouling the important Howard interlockings.  Shot from the end of the Howard ST platform, four "horses" drag the test set through the Howard complex, on their way to track one. The buffer cars would follow. The four car sets would be placed at either end of track one leaving about three miles of open track. I swear they were doing 70 MPH on one runby. David Harrison |

Do these cars have the same type of cineston controller like the 3200s or do they have a joystick like the 2800s? Also why did CTA continue the use of the full sized marker lights instead of the cluster of LEDs in a single housing like the PATH PA4s? CTA cars look a bit lopsided if the right and left markers are different colors. Cluster style markers would look a bit more symmetrical. |

Yes, a very definite plan that they be designed the same. The 3200s are considered to be quite successful. There were three design groups of 3200s you know, plain vanilla, ones with catwalks for the pantographs, and ones with indentations in the roof for catwalk installation.David Harrison |

Keep in mind that WMATA after extensive testing started running DC cars with AC cars, and it seems to work out just fine (how often do you see a train of 4000 series Bredas). So, if it works out in testing, they might be able to trainline, who knows. But I doubt it as well. |

From all my sources, there are no plans to mix them. This will mark the third time that the CTA fleet will have an incompatibility. Back in the 1950s, when the PCC 6000s were purchased, they were unable to run with the wood/steel cars and the 4000 series steels. Then in the 1960s, the Pullman 2000s were the first high performance cars and they couldn't run with the PCCs. Now the AC high performances can't run with the other high performance cars...2200s through 3200s. In the late 90s and early 00s, there was a slight non conformance....pantograph equipment was needed for the Yellow/Skokie. Today Howard will assign Red line 2600s or Evanston 2400s there. But some operators really don't like the 2400s. All the catwalk equipped 3200s went to the Brown in exchange, but this morning I saw one back on the Yerllow.David Harrison |

The original 5000s , back in 1945 were compartment cars and they were articulated. Two sets came from St. Louis Car Company and two came from Pullman. Together they equaled an eight car CRT/CTA "L". I have a video called "Streamlining Chicago" which has some shots of the BMT Bluebird being tested on the Sea Beach Line and also entering Dekalb Ave. There were also publicity drawings and postcards showing a car identical to the BMT Bluebird operating in the State Street Subway. I would venture to say that the closest cars to the BMT Bluebird are the CRT/CTA articulated units. By the way is there any information as to why CRT and its successor the CTA used streetcar style blinker doors rather than sliding doors that were in use on conventional rapid transit cars, including the Bluebird, up to that time? |

Denver's Siemens SD-100 LRVs with DC motors can and do operate with SD-160s with AC motors. They seem to go through phases of intermixing cars alternating with running solid trains. It's been more of the latter of late. |

Really the 2000s, 4000s, 6000s, etc. have also been "resurrected," but as buses. Old 5000s, in service 1947-1985:  Only four trains were built; three survive (as of February). |

I don't have specific info at hand about the choice of blinker type doors for "L" equipment, but the use was quite extensive. Introduced on the four articulated 5000 cars, blinkers came on the 770 PCCs, the 180 Pullman high performance cars, and the 150 Budd 2200 series. The 2400 series was advertised as having two-part sliding doors to accomodate wheelchairs, implying that if that hadn't been a legal requirement, that blinker doors might have still been used..my conjecture here.The only official detriment to blinker doors was expressed by management following a fiery crash between a PCC streetcar and a gasoline truck. Management felt that many deaths were caused by the crush of passengers against the blinker doors that kept the doors from opening inwards to allow for escape. Still the design was applied to cars received after that fatal incident. Management insisted however that doors be able to be opened without power in an emergency. David Harrison |

I would guess that the historical cars , 4271/4272, still on the property and still used might have had a bearing on the series number. And the CTA has historically used a new number series to designate a fleet of cars incompatible with other cars. The 6000s brought in the PCC fleet. Don't know how the 1-50s fit into that. Then the 2000s brought in the air conditioned, high performance series which rolled over into the 3000s. So, maybe it was just that the 5000 number was next in line.David Harrison |

No, Skokie trains, the Yellow line only runs between Dempster AV and Howard ST. There has never been any plan to extend the operation past Howard. A mid point station is now planned for Oakton ST. On the north end, extending the line to Old Orchard Shopping Mall has been a dream for 40 years and the LPA for this was approved by the CTA board, but a loud contingent appeared at the next level of hearings to voice typical NIMBY objectons.David Harrison |

No, Skokie trains, the Yellow line only runs between Dempster AV and Howard ST. There has never been any plan to extend the operation past Howard.It has been discussed at the planning level, but the rebuilding of Dempster Street to a two-car station is a big obstacle. |

Beg pardon....I have never heard of any discussion to extend the Yellow south of Howard ST. And the Dempster Skokie is already a two car platform. It's been that way since the 5000s were converted to 51-54.David Harrison |
