Strange since there was supposed to be a line along Lafayette. |

If the line was built, the middle track at Beford-Nostrand Avenue was most likely supposed to be for terminating trains on, like an off-peak terminal. The middle trackway at Classon Avenue was supposed to be a turning track. What's weird is that there's no room for a 3rd trackway between Classon and Bedford-Nostrand Avenue stations. The middle track at Bedford-Nostrand splits into two tracks east and west of the station, and ends with bumper blocks. I can't tell where the middle tracks east of Bedford-Nostrand ends, because the middle tracks ramps down to an lower level. |

I don't think the middle tracks doesn't go too far east of Bedford/Nostrand. I have heard revenue collection trains can go in there to allow a regular G train to run by. So the tracks are roughly at least a train length long. |

From what I seen, the tail tracks seems to ramp up to an upper level before ending. I could see that when it was possible from standing on the RFW of an R32/R40M/R42 F train. |

Posted by bigrene22 on Sun Sep 13 09:38:59 2009, in response to South 4th Street, posted by bigrene22 on Sat Sep 12 15:02:05 2009. I know this is a bit off-topic, but thanks to Tunnel Rat and randyo, I now know that there was a layup track east of the Roosevelt Avenue-Jackson Heights station. This layup track was on that ramp up to the unused upper level, trackless tunnel. In the interlocking machine in the station tower, there are spare levers for the necessary signals and switches. If you look carefully, you can see where the track was once displayed on the model board, but have been painted out. The unused trackless ramp leading to the S/B track, there is a homeball signal "D1-1415" which has the lower portion lenses covered over. That layup track was obviously there when the IND Roosevelt Avenue station was the last stop on the Queens Blvd Line from 1933 to when the line was extended to Union Turnpike-Kew Gardens station in 1936. In late 1936 or early 1937 is when the Jamaica Yard was opened, and that layup track was taken out. What's funny about this is that the ramp leading to the S/B track east of Roosevelt Avenue was built for the IND Second System. I don't know where that layup track ended. Another interesting note is that the unused upper level Roosevelt Avenue station was built for 8 cars of the 60ft train cars (R1/9's anyone?). |

When I was the zone trainmaster in that area in 1983, I had occasion to ride the line which I had also done in years before I even came to work for the TA and I was always surprised that the tracks DO converge between Classon Av and Bedford/Nostrand and spread out again just S/O Bed/Nost station. I would have thought that the third trackway would be continuous but it is not. |

Incredible map!Looks like the IND planners wanted the city to widen South 4th Street along it's entire southern half then carve out a new street to Beaver Street/Bushwick Ave. I wonder why they were so desperate to avoid building under Broadway (in they same way they were building under Fulton Street). There is an crossover right outside the station[Bedford]..come together for a short length..then open to a crossover trackway..then into the station...then another crossover...then normal tunnel. From the way the track bed looks..it appears as if there use to be track and third rail there at one time. |
