The only difference is that we expect things like that in the semi-free countries of the Middle East and the former Soviet bloc. We never expected it to be implemented here :( |

Yeah, when you know your rights like here in the States, it's one thing, but when you don't know the language, let alone your rights, then play it cool. Enjoy your trip anyway; I'm sure it's perfectly legal to enjoy the ride on the trains.your pal, Fred |

The irony is that Istanbul is in a Muslim country, one which is in the supply side of international terrorism, not the demand. |

What's the date of the photos? As of a couple of years ago, Turkey's gone away from Atatürk and towards religious extremism. |

The rules in question seem to have taken effect in 2004. Not sure what the deal was before then. Some photos seem to be post-2004, many seem to be of the historic trolley which is an attraction in and of itself. None of them appear to have been taken from within fare controls. There are no photos of either Metro line or of the new funicular line, not sure if that is due to photo restrictions or the relatively young age of the lines in the case of two of those three (M2 and the new funicular are very new from what I know, if I wasn't at an internet cafe and wanting to limit my internet I'd find out more info). Another challenge to Istanbul tram photography, narrow streets. odd lighting situatoins and lots of pedestrians. Getting clear shots without people obstructing the view is tough sometimes. Been on T1, M2, and F1, the last 2 in their entirety. Have yet to ride M1, T1, or the Tunel but will hopefully cover all of them before I leave here. |

Well, be careful. Ever seen "Midnight Express"? Something tells me that they don't have some equivalent of the TAB for dealing with this sort of thing. And I wouldn't want to quibble with their police as to whether I was on transit property or not.Of course I support the right of people to take pictures on transit property- I've done it myself. But I'll save my First Amendment battles for the only country in which said amendment applies... |

But I'll save my First Amendment battles for the only country in which said amendment applies...I read a story about a railfan who visited the old Soviet Union and was arrested for taking pictures of their trains. He just started talking about trains, ad nauseum, that they brushed him off as some kind of nut and let him go.... |

That MIGHT work. After all, Soviet cops probably weren't paid much, and woulda been easier to let him go.OTOH, he could have met up with some cops who decided this guy would be useful in soccer practice...and there'da been no ACLU to help him out. |

You actually covered it in your first reply when you said "you don't know what rights you have" or something to that effect, but I was reading quickly. I try to only spend 30 or 60 minutes in these internet cafes so they don't charge me for the next interval. Might as well use my money as wisely as possible.Don't tell anyone, but I took two photos on one of their Metro lines today, putting the camera in P mode, auto WB, and at an ISO that would be guarenteed to get decent results. Quickly pulled out the camera when I needed to, shot, and put it away again. Got a few stares from the few locals nearby but I didn't see any staff. SOmeone asked me something when I took a photo near the end of one of the tram lines, but I indicated I didn't understand a word and continued on my way. Also got some other good shots (as they appeared on the LCD, we'll see once I download them) on the other tram line by the more touristy stuff today. Going to try the "shooting from the hip" method again tomorrow on the other Metro line. This is one of those times where NOT having the DSLR would be helpful. The photo quality might not be as good, but I could be much omre discrete. I still have my older, smaller compact digital but I didn't bring it on this trip. |

Link?I got a few photos today of the Metro and the more suburban tram line (T2). Getting T1 is easy, it runs by many of the tourist attractions. |

I also got photos at the mainline European station yesterday, no problems, as well as of a shunter and suburban train near there today. Had I been willing to wait a few more minutes from another vantage point, I would have had a great shot of a suburban train, but it was along a very narrow sidewalk where I would have been an obstruction, I didn't know the train schedule, and I've generally been trying to keep moving as much as possible when I have the camera out. |

Got a few "from the hip" photos on the M2 today, also some of the Tunel. The Tunel is a bit of a tourist attraction, had no problems there at all. |
