The assumption (and it may very well be a bad one) is that the temporary tracks would have been build right over where the eastbound platform is and that the station in the picture is a temporary station.

Whatever the outcome, that is a great picture.

The platform and anything on it look too permanent to be temporary (they look old). Then again the power lines are already moved to the new grade separated structure. I don't see a platform on the train side which suggests it's an old eastbound express track on a four-tracked section.

Must be Floral Park or west of there but I think I'd rule out Floral Park.

My guess is that there is a corresponding westbound platform on the north side of the new elevated structure. The platform does look old.

Maybe it's time to play "Where isn't this"...

The key things to consider are:

A - Next station to the west must be visible.
B - Next station to the west must have been elevated at the same time.
C - Next station to the west must be an island platform
D - Power lines must be on the south side of the elevated structure.
E - Tracks going west must be relatively straight.

Here's the list of LIRR stations that it could be -- i.e. stations that were elevated and electrified prior to the M-1's coming on the scene. Next to each, I've placed the letters A-D to show which of the above 4 criteria are not satisfied by the station.

Laurelton -- C
Rosedale -- E
St. Albans -- A, C
Springfield Gardens -- A
Valley Stream -- A, D
Lynbrook -- A, D
Rockville Centre -- A, D
Baldwin -- A, D
Freeport -- A, D
Wantagh -- B, D
Seaford -- D
Massapequa -- B, D
Babylon -- A
Bellerose -- C
Floral Park -- ??

I agree with your analysis....but one question....how are we sure we are looking west? That would determine it seems to rule out the Babylon Branch because the power lines are on the north.

I traveled east on the Babylon Branch Thursday morning and kept an eye out for any possibility that this could be one of the stations east of RVC. Given the distances between stations, and the position of the power lines, I would say we can eliminate the Babylon branch as a possibility.

I also think the Babylon Branch is out....as the high tension wires are on the wrong side of the track. The view is definitely looking west by the position of the sun, that would mean the poles are on the south side of the tracks. Along the Babylon Branch, they are on the north side I believe.

Ye olde Floral Park

This pic raises a question, since I can't tell if it's looking east or west. Is the current station located in the same spot as this older one? Apparently it's got the same configuration as Hollis or Queens Village, meaning Hemstead trains serve two outside local tracks, while mainline trains run express down the middle two. That would mean there had to be an interlocking immediately west of old Floral Park to allow the local tracks to connect to the diverging line towards Hempstead, as we see currently at QUEENS. But the current Hempstead branch diverges immediately east of the new station. Anyone know how the tracks were configured during this era?

And while I'm at it, anyone know why Floral Park was configured for mainline trains to use, but NOT Bellrose? (the same question could be asked of Valley Stream, compared to Lynbrook).

I wish I had been around for the old Floral Park and Bellerose stations.

I think what you are seeing in the original picture is that the reconstruction/elevation of Floral Park and Bellerose happened at the same time. You can see the temporary tracks continue west along what is today Atlantic Avenue until just past the Bellerose station island platform (that is underconstruction). Then they curve to the right to rejoin the already elevated Main Line .

"Is the current station located in the same spot as this older one [at Floral Park]?"

The building at the left in the color pic (with the white cupola) is still there, visible in the online aerial pics. So yes, the station's about the same place. The eastward signal bridge for PARK interlocking was west of the west end of the platforms.

If it is Floral Park...

We're looking at the two Hempstead Branch tracks, with two main line tracks out of sight on the north side of the fill? Did they have four temporary tracks during construction, or just two? Was there a westward Hempstead Branch platform?

If that is a water tank in the distance, then Floral Park is out?

The thing that put me over the top was the high-tension poles. In part because Floral Park is just about the only elevated station where they are on the south side of the tracks -- but more because there appear to be about 8 poles in the photo before you get to that next station. If you check a satellite photo, there are 8 poles between Bellerose and Floral Park today.

We need Wayne to clinch it for everyone...

I'm voting for Floral Park. I drove through there today and was going to take a picture from where we suspect this may be, but it would have put me smack in the middle of Atlantic Avenue, and unlike other areas of the railroad, this section has not been denuded. Today, one cannot see from that point to the Bellerose station, so a picture from today probably would not be very instructive. However, the terrain of Atlantic Avenue matches what we see in the picture, and the distance to Bellerose seemed to be about right.

The appointments of the station, assuming it was temporary, may have come from a permanent station that was removed during construction. I also suppose a 5-car train makes sense if it is the Hempstead branch. Presumably, even back then, the Main Line would have had longer trains.

I couldn't take the suspense any longer and sent Wayne an e-mail. (I'm also looking forward to figuring out the next photo -- as these have been fun). He was kind enough to read through the thread and send along the following note:

I would tend to agree with the statement that that is Floral Park. I remember single-tracking at one point in time at Tulip
Avenue. There is also a down grade on Atlantic Avenue right at that
location. I seem to remember temporary platforms in more than one
location - one as shown in the photo (Childs Avenue) and the other across from Dalton's funeral home (Carlton Avenue). You are looking at Bellerose, already pretty much complete, in the distance.

I'm as convinced as I think I can ever be that the photo is of Floral Park, looking west.
