Lehigh Valley K5 Pacific as built by Baldwin in 1916:

2101 & 2102 were streamlined for John Wilkes
service (New York Penn Station-Mauch Chunk PA),by industrial designer Otto Kuhler in 1938:

A Pennsylvania RR electric would ferry LV trains to & from Penn Station. The power would be exchanged at NK Interlocking, near HUNTER on the NEC. It's the present route used by NJT's Raritan Valley Line to access Newark Penn Station.

Good pix, those. (And good luck getting direct rail service between New York and the Lehigh Valley reinstated, too.) Mauch Chunk (nowadays Jim Thorpe) has some of the most spectacular views of mountains from a valley that you can have . . . pity about the LV's station, too (burned deliberately for a fire department exercise, IIRC; at least the CNJ station's still standing).

Whoa, that's some fine locomotive in that second pic. They're both good, natch, but the second one sends me.

your pal,
Fred

Haven't met a fan yet that isn't moved by streamlining. The boxpok drivers are a good practical move, too.
