|
Posted by Gerry6309 on Fri Dec 5 13:53:18 2008, in response to Put-Ins/Pull Outs, posted by BusRider on Fri Dec 5 10:43:33 2008. There is a question of semantics here. A train which "lays-up" is taken out of service and stored. A train which "lays-over" is sent back in service in the opposite direction. The definition is important since a train laying over at Court Sq. will change ends on the track it arrives on and use a crossover south of the station, while one laying up at the same location will run light to Jamaica Yard.A layover or lay-up at Queensboro Plaza will use the center track on the Astoria line, the layup will go further north, while the layover will clear the switch entering and change ends. Kings Highway on the F has a center track for layovers with crossovers both north and south of the station. Lay-ups are unlikely due to the proximity to the yards at Coney Island. An A from the south could cross over north of 59th St., but would impede southbound A and D trains in doing so. An A from the north cannot turn at 59th. B & D trains from the south can turn on the center platform at 145th. Trains rom the Bronx must unload and lay over on a center track south of the station, then cross to the northbound to go back. Laying over at West 4th St. seems to be a questionable proposition at best. There are crossovers north of the station but any change of direction requires an adverse move on a busy track. A northbound could turn near 42nd St. while a southbound could turn at 2nd Av. Your question about the R needs to specify where the train is coming from since both locations are near the middle of a very long line. You can answer a lot of your own questions by checking out the track maps at nycsubway.org |

Ooh, I smell a challenge.Where does the A Express layup at before it starts at 59th Street? - a yard or layup track Where does the A layup when it ends at Euclid Avenue? - a yard or layup track Is there a yard at Beach 116th Street? - yes Where does G trains layup when ending at Court Square? - a yard or layup track Where do B/D trains layup before starting at 145th street? - a yard or layup track How does the D train have a trip that starts at West 4th? - it doesn't. It starts at Broadway/Lafayette. Where does the F layup at Kings Hwy? - a yard or layup track Where does the N layup when it starts at Queensboro Plaza? - a yard or layup track Where does the R layup when ending at Canal St and starting at Times Square? - a yard or layup track |

Posted by Eric B on Fri Dec 5 20:18:39 2008, in response to Re: Put-Ins/Pull Outs, posted by Gerry6309 on Fri Dec 5 13:53:18 2008. He means trains that go into or out of service in the middle of the line. For the A, he most likely means the Rock Park spacials that supposedly only start at 59th. They I believe simply come down light from 207th, rather than turning back from the south. Trains that drop out at 145 run light to Concourse. Midday, there is one that lays up on the express north of the station. KHF layups/putins go to/come from the yard. He's referring to one D that starts at W4 or BwayLaf in the PM. That runs from CIYD down the F line to get there. I don;t know why they do that, and the last time I looked, it was about 9 or so PM, I think on weekends even, so that is kind of strange. As others said, G's at CSQ run light to Jamaica, and R's lay up at both City Hall and also at Lex on the 2nd Ave leads. |

The most consistent explanation I received for that particular D put-in is because of the work trains that cross the bridge at about that time. If a slow moving work train delayed uptown D service, that put-in could be used as appropriate. Michael |

Posted by randyo on Sat Dec 6 18:46:16 2008, in response to Re: Put-Ins/Pull Outs, posted by MGL on Sat Dec 6 02:10:33 2008. That is correct. Back when the B was the West End service, there were actaully 4 Bs on the late PM that operated via the F Line to Bway/Laff where they went in service there. This was also before the 63 St connector opened up and the Bs terminated at 21 St during late PMs and weekends. There were also 2 Ns that operated over the Brighton Line to Dekalb for the same reason although I dont recall whether they ran light or in service, to provide "windows" for work trains operating on 4 Ave. Also, due to the work trains, there were some S/B Rs that turned at either Canal or Whithall St to provide N/B service into Queens and the headway N/B out of 95 st was opened and adjusted by holds at Whitehall and Canal St to blend with the short turns. The reason that the Rs were impacted was that some of these work trains had to operate vis the Montague St Tunnel to get to locations in the Eastern Division so windows were required there as well. |
