Yeah, they're going to start qualifying the crews on the new SFT. A T/O or C/R cannot operate an in-service train without being qualified on all sections of the line.

They need to make a BIG DEAL about closing the loop.

LION SUGGESTS A PARTY!

Bring that LAST TRAIN IN with a bunch of Sub Chatters on it, Set up a big Bar-B-Q right there on the platform, play some tunes and have a party, for about two hours or so. Then pack every thing up. put it back on the train and make a FAN RUN north to 242nd Street.

They should use the RED BIRDS for this run. Let it start at 242nd Street, with stops at 96th 72nd 42nd 34th and at Chambers. It will lay up in the loop for the party, and then return whence it came. Fare on board for the party should be about $20 with proceeds to the Museum.

That was basically what they did when Parsons-Archer opened (without the pointing). ;-)

I was working midnights on the J the pick the TA began qualifying crews on the Archer Avenue lines. Crews would report to 121 and ride a J relay down to Parsons. Then they would go upstairs and qualify on the E portion of the line, return to Parsons and finish up with a trip back to 121.

IIRC, we did the same thing when 63rd Street opened. Report to 57/6, operate a train up to 21st Street and the TSS pointed out the various moves that could be made and the lay-up tracks at Lex.

10:30AM tomorrow, Tracks 1A and 4A go into service, and a designated test train to operate all week.

Next weekend should be quite an event, no service from Chambers to the Ferry, as trains run lite to the new SF, and return to Chambers St for N/B Service.

Got to love it!

And I still think they need to look at keeping at some point at re-opening the old SF station as a terminal for the 5 (when not running to Brooklyn), 6 during overnights and rebuilding the entryways to the short platform at BG for a two-car shuttle that would operate during peak hours (and other times when the 5 is running to Brooklyn) between SF and BG.

Anything that is vintage would not be able to do so. It would involve removing of door linkages similar to mods they did to the 5700s that ran on the BG shuttles. R62s would be able to open any door any time as long as other single panels are cut out.

It's doubtful that will even happen, MTA NYC Transit needs to justify why such a service should be operated. In times like this, they will be tightening their belts and keep the operating costs at a minimum.

If there's any indicator of the old station closing for good, the Station Service Booth located in the ferry terminal will shut down and be re-located to an area within the confines of the new station (exactly where is beyond me). The old booth and it's associated Turnstiles will be removed and the entrance to the old platform sealed (probably with the exception of emergency access ONLY).

The Whitehall Street Station Service Booth is closing for good as well effective with the opening of the new terminal station. Unless I'm mistaken, there will be one unified complex.

The new entrance is within feet of the doors to Whitehall Terminal.

Take a second to stop and THINK about what most Staten Islanders have to do or went through before you start mentioning huge steps backwards.

-Bowling Green: Have to walk three blocks up to go there yet it's heavily used by Staten Islanders and there's no complaints.

-Whitehall St BMT: The old entrance used to be further than where the new SF/Whitehall entrance is going to be. It used to be right at the corner of Whitehall & State and not near the doors of the terminal. And currently riders have to cross the street to get to Whitehall St Station. No Complaints.

-Bus Ramps & SIR on SI side: Both quite a walk from the ferry docks and further than where the new SF entrance would be. No complaints.

-South Ferry: The entrance has been tossed around so much since the fire in the 1990s and it never used to be right inside the terminal like it is now. Still No Complaints.

Did you forget about the temporary station houses at SF? No complaints then either!

I love Morris' whining. Next he'll complain that kosher food isn't served on board the train.

False. The location of the new SF subway terminal is just one of many reasons why the new terminal is not automatically superior to the old terminal.
