That's actually a rather impressive "rate of return." I know the same experiments were done on buses out west with pretty impressive results as well.

Do you or anybody know how those "spinning refriegerators" worked out a couple of years ago that they were testing on the Roackway line?

WOW. Cool to know, thanks. Never knew the NYCTA did an experiment like that.

Did those cars have it until retirement? I doubt it, but just asking.

I read before that some systems have flywheels located in station areas, but that requires "NTT style" regeneration which puts power into the third rail.

Do you know the specs of the flywheel? Such as the weight of it, in partiular. Diameter as well. I'll try to calculate how fast this thing would need to spin to get a good amount of energy stored in there. Also, how much heavier were the cars?

The statement suggests a single sensing system. Where do you read more than one device?

But these days, most agencies are looking into supercapacitors. I read about buses that have supercapacitors for acceleration. Which might be better in a sense, though. But at the current stage, flywheels are still probably better.

There is also an experimental system of inducing a powerful current into a superconductive solenoid(sealed in a a "refrigerator" of sorts), and a device which can tap into the current somehow, and create an AC current so that it can be coupled to the drive system without touching the refrigerator, and messing up the insulation from heat.

I see, thanks. I am guessing those would require NTT type regeneration which would send power to the third rail. Unless, of course those flywheels were there as a sort of "substation", which would be the case for anything before an NTT.

All the R32s are in excellent condition. The slants had the really bad physical issues, but it seems that all the current cars are pretty good. The R38s, R40/40Ms and R42s could use a coat of paint on the roofs, but the TA is letting them rust. What a shame.

exactly, the trains are fine their just old that's all

they should only use R160's to replace broken inoperable trains (like those broken in an accident or something) and also for service increases there's no need to replace thousands of trains that are working just fine in my opinion

No, that's the statement made in the original posting and said,
" The memo that I saw didn’t give the car number but according to note, the car was not scheduled for reefing but was reefed sometime last month, by mistake, with a sophisticated biological / radiological sensing system still hidden within the car structure. The prototype sensor was installed in 2005 as part of a federally funded anti-terrorism project."
The post you were floundering in the general direction of responding to said
"I would think there is more than one device being tested. So it may be on a R68 as well as other contracts."
So we know the prototype of the system was installed in an R32, 38, 40, or 42 which was reefed, that much is extremely obvious. However, we do not know if the MTA is testing other sensor suites in other newer car classes. That is what Rockparkman would appear to have been trying to get across before you utterly failed to comprehend what he wrote.

ROCKPARKMAN said: "the car was not scheduled for reefing but was reefed sometime last month, by mistake, with a sophisticated biological / radiological sensing system still hidden within the car structure."

Straightforward that there was one prototype on one train car.

ROCKPARKMAN also said: "I would think there is more than one device being tested. So it may be on a R68 as well as other contracts."

He doesn't know if there were more than one phototype used. The memo likely would have mentioned it. Maybe MTA is testing other sensors on other cars and on other classes. But I don't think a R68 has been reefed.
