Maybe they ran some short trains with mixed consists, but i really doubt a really long train of 20 cars was moved in service, would have been noticed, i think.

Maybe an 11 car train would pass easily, unless a station tendant sees it, or the train hits the terminal.

Indeed.

They were also run on lines where they don't currently run 11 cars.

The doors on the 7th and further back cars wouldn't open, now, would they?

In theory none of the doors on any of the cars should have opened when the train berth at the Largo platform. The track circuit between the last axle on the 6th car and the WEE-Z bond at the end platform prevented the train from getting a train berth at platform OK to open doors signal from wayside because the axles on the 7th cars were shunting the track circuit.

But she saw the lights later at another station though.

True. Fact is control had to confirm the actual train length by asking the operator. The train was telling the train control system that the train was 6 cars long. The train control system displays in central control were showing the train as 6 cars. A more detailed display of the occupied track circuits would have revealed that the train was in fact longer then 6 cars.

No. The terminal supervisor is in the dispatcher office at the endbound end of the platform. The dispatchers office at Largo has window that gives a clear view of most of the platform. Depending of where the personal in the office were sitting they may not have had a clear view of the full length of the platform.

IINM he's asking whether or not the T/O is still at work or if she was sent home. I gather from the article that she's sitting at home.

That is only true if the marker for 6-car trains are set so that the train is perfectly centered on the platform. In NYC, the markers for short trains are sometimes at the front of the platform or rear of the platform (depending on inclines in the station or where the entrance/exit is located, I've assumed).

If the marker were at the front of the platform at one station, 8 cars might have platformed there and taken on passengers. At a later station, with a centered marker the 8th car could have opened it's doors into the tunnel.

My post is hypothetical -- I don't know whether all the markers are centered on WMATA.

The stop marks are at the same location in all of the station 2, 4, 6 and 8. They are virtual marks (Most station have 4, 6 and 8 car stop mark signs). All trains shorter the 8 cars are programmed to stop at the center of the platform. Only one station is configured to long or short stop trains that are less then 8 cars long. That station is Gallery Place on the Red line. Trains less then 8 cars to Shady Grove short stop, trains less then 8 cars to Glenmont long stop.

The program station stop part of the train control system tell the train where to stop at the platform. The program station stop function is executed when the rear end of the first car in the train passes over the marker coil pair located 2700' from the center of the platform. Train shorter then 8 cars that short or long stop at a platform are programmed to do so using the long short station stop control setting.

Incline is not an issue on metrorail as all but 4 stations are inclined at 0.035% over the full length of the platform. The other 4 are level.

My bad. Likely sitting at home as inferred in the article.

As another poster point out elsewhere this thread, WMATA tends to discipline operators for infraction that can be traced to equipment malfunctions.
