And going by the R142's which costs over $1 mil per car, the R179's are gonna be much more costly and to cover just the R46's would require a LOT of $. I doubt the MTA would have enough to start mothballing the R68/a's b4 they turned 40. |

Well if it's other than the L, then I can see the R143's on the J/Z since they'd probably have the same amt of car needs and the J/Z route doesn't change much so a strip map that can light up stops for either the J or Z shouldn't be a problem. |

I still think the C should be 10-car trains so that it would be easy to just switch trainsets for the A and C lines. Having an 8-car only set for the C limits trains the A can use. |

That is really only because the way things are ordered has changed. The IRT R17-36s were prettymuch the same and numbered above 2500. This is almost a complete transformation of these cars into NTTs. With the cost of what these suggestions would entail, it probably wouldn't be worth such a heavy overhaul when new trains would be ordered within the next 15 to 20 years anyway. Or the next 5 or 10 as some are now suggesting. |

That's true but sometimes in a severe emergency, such as an armed passenger in the car, physical harm can come to passengers waiting for the crew to even find out that there is a problem. Due to the crime and other emergency condition problem, passengers need IMMEDIATE access betwwen cars. |

Also, these cars were fully compatible with each other unlike current car orders in which a letter suffix on the contract number render each equipment group incapable of operating together in the same train. If the MTA had any guts, it would mandate that all NTT car classes MUST be fully able to operate in trains with all other classes like the PATH did when they GOHed the PA-1s through PA-3s to be compatible with the PA-4s. |

Some SMEEs are running on 50+ year old trucks from the R16 contracts and earlier. Traindude said this. Heck, you can run a slant with a brightliner if you wanted to. They regularly run 32s with 38s. There is a married pair of a 40 and 42. They even ran Redbirds with 62s, though not in passenger service, i believe. I also think there is a photo somewhere of an R10 hooked up to a slant. Anyways, R11s were definately compatible with all SMEEs. Shame the TA bought different, INCOMPATIBLE cars.Look at the arnine contracts R1-R9, all with interchangeable parts, and compatible. |

I see 32 operate with 38s quite frequently on the A and the C lines. I've thought of that too, and honestly, I don't think it's much of a difference. If you have the ability to "escape" from an armed nut between stations, the nut also has the ability to follow you through those same, unlocked doors. In other cases, the train usually arrives in a station fairly quickly. The extreme exception to this would be if an "emergency" occurred on an R-44 (A) train over the flats. |

If a person were coming after you, you would definitely be better off running from car to car to attempt an escape than having no alternative trapped behind a locked door. The only problem is that customers would likely abuse an unlocking switch or button and pass through a dangerous gap between the cars unaware of any worse danger than a 60' car. Maybe they could add an "In case of emergency, open door, alarm will sound" sticker to deter abuse. |
