I didn't challenge that assertion, just that a potential R179 would replace the hippos before many of them reach 30 years of service. The R179 is needed to replace the R44's and R46's, which will all turn 40 in less than a decade. I'm pretty sure the MTA would want to replace the R44's ASAP with new 75' cars. |

Every time I come out of the portal and its misty or light rain and Im in an R142 I do pray. How are the R-160s in the rain tho do they suffer from the same problems as the R-142s or can they actually handle the misty and light rain flawlessly? Like I said if they're gonna bring in the 142/a to the 7 they MUST correct the problem when it comes to braking in light rain/snow misty weather. Its okay on the deuce or 4 or 5 when you're only outside but for so long but the 7 like you said its 90% outdoors and a lot of the stations you have very short boards so play room is not an option at some of these stations. Only stations you got play room on the 7 is 33/40/46/74/61 and Junction outside of those the rest of the markers are at the edge of the platform. |

True, there's enough light bulbs available.BUT, if you end up using the light bulbs furthest to the left or right, there'd be no room on the overlaying strip map to show the station names, because it would overlap the directional arrow. |

Put the station names underneath or cover up part of the arrow. I don't think either would be the end of the world. Or leave out the local stations because the 2 and 4 only make those stops during the overnight hours. The map doesn't say that a 2 stops at 79th Street or that a 4 stops at Astor Place, why should the strip maps? |

If you want to go back a few years, the BMT Multis probably had the shortest service life of any non experimental car fleet. they entered service in 1936 on the newly created 14 St/Fulton St Line (and 14 St/Canarsie Line as well) and ended service on the Myrtle/Chambers Line in 1961 a service life of 25 years. |

Also with the FIND system they need to organize the find system so much better, they program that in a way that at the top are the normal routes, normal southbound, normal northbound routes for the day then underneath that the various different routes for every line. You have to go through sometimes 20-25 different southbound options before you find the northbound route that the route uses 99% of the time. God help the D line crews when they get R-160s since the D has a god awful amount of reroutes it can go through.Huh? Are you R-160 qualified? Sorry, I don't know where you work. When you first set-up the route on an R-160, you select the line, the direction (North or South), the day (Weekday or Weekend), and then the Interval of your train. It then gives you a list of all the possible destinations for that direction only (north or south), with the most commonly used destinations on top. The rest are listed below in alphabetical order. After selecting your destination, the TOD gives you all of the available routes to that destination, starting with normal operating patterns (000 series), followed by differing stopping patterns (100 series), and then reoutes onto other lines (200 series). |

The (4) line strip map does show the local stops, which is useful for late-night runs and weekend service changes. As for showing the station names on the bottom for the (2) line, it wouldn't work on the left side, because it would cover up the "Route Change - Map Not In Use" message, and TA would probably feel it looked somewhat out of place to have most stations on top of the map line, and a few on the bottom. |

The 5 via 7th Avenue Local AFAIK is not available.Yeah, there's no (5) via Seventh Avenue Local routing. There are many R-142 routings that I believe aren't available for use because of memory contraints in the R-142 computers. |

Nice, I didn't know they did that on the R-160s, I'm exclusive to the R-142/142a programming, the what seems to be ancient way of doing things, if thats how the R-142s will be programmed in the future thank you god, hopefully they'll improve also the announcements as well. Some of the announcements are far too long, especially on the 6 line with Parkchester, Westchester Sq, E 143 St, and Morrison-Sound View, if they can just shorten those it'd be much nicer. Also they need to just say "This is Pehlam Express 6 Train" instead of "This is a 6 Local Train making express stops in the bronx" I look forward to this FIND system, I thought that was the name for the route programming selection period. Thanks for that update. |

But think its kinda stupid to retire cars that are leading the fleet in MDBF and are not even 30 years old. Same goes for the R62/A they are great reliable cars holding up well no need to retire them so young. And what is replacing the phase I R32s? I think putting FINDs on the 142/As will hard a thing to do. Being that they gotta reprogram the computer systems and all. And isnt the MTA having money problems? How are they going to pay for all this stuff? And what populsion sound will the R179s have? But its knida depressing that the R46/62/A and 68/A will be retired soon. Sad just sad... |

I spent a year and a half in the A Div, mainly on the (6) and (7).The FIND refers specifically to the R-160's electronic strip map. The TOD display is largely identical to the R-142A, with some slight operational improvements. Selecting a route is much more organized, as I just described, but the computer is also much faster. When you select a route, it activates and plays the announcement immediately. Similarly, when selecting a Special Announcement, it plays immediately. There are also improvements in how the distance counter "resets" at stations, and the R-160 also allows you to alter the stopping pattern of the very next station, so you can go "express" on the fly. |

Ok, so they are getting rid of pretty good, and sturdy ALL stainless steel cars, the Budd BRightliners, BUT, they are over 40 years old, so there IS a SLIGHT justification there, in terms of age only. They shouldn't be reefed though, have lots of life, need a rebuild. More is justification for the not all stainless steel cars with roof rust and more rust, which would be difficult to save them...NOW, however, TA is planning to replace the R68s and R62s? Some of the most reliable cars in the fleet...WITHIN TEN YEARS!! MTA: "Wait a minute, what revenue decrease??, lets buy up some new cars so we can get more commision in our pockets!!" they might forget to postpone SAS another 10 years as well, but they do good in the department of delaying SAS, look at the past 70 years. Northeastern, is this the truth? Was this guy pulling your leg, or will the TA really go further into their game of dickoslap? |
