Metrolink:This was during the first week of service in October 1992. I had Fridays off during that time, so I got up early, took the bus to Van Nuys station and got the last inbound train of the morning. Later that morning at Union Station. Yes, it was raining that day (it was a few minutes later that I took the pic of the LADOT Stewart & Stevenson Apollo T-40 seen in this post. A Metrolink train at Union Station in June 1993 (I was there to ride the just-opened line to Riverside). |

San Diego! My first San Diego Trolley pic, in August 1984 at 12th & Imperial (the MTDB building wouldn't be built for a few more years). Just the one line to the border back then, no MTS logos on the cars, the old block letter destination signs. Sorry about the quality, was taken with a 110 camera. This was in April 1991 on C Street Also from 4/91, at the Grossmont station. (Taken from the same vantage point where I took the pic of the San Diego Transit Fishbowl in this post (the 4th pic) |

The UTA cars are Siemens SD-100s (I think), while those Sacramento cars are Siemens-Duewag U2As, the forerunner of the SD-100. |

You're welcome :)Continuing in San Diego: One last one from 1991 Taken at the 12th/Imperial transfer station on the Bayside Line side. The rest of these are from April 1996 2 South (Blue) Line trains meet at the Great American Plaza (I think that's the name of the station). A single Siemens-Duewag U2 car deadheads from the yard along Harbor Drive on the Bayside Line. An East (Orange) Line train heads west (northwest) on the Bayside headed to Santee. More next post |

Another train on the Bayside, just out of 12th/Imperial. Petco Park is now located a bit to the left of this pic (AFAIK). A 2-car train of Siemens SD-100s on the Bayside. The third track in the pic, closest to the camera is unpowered and used for Coaster and Amtrak trains to access their yard, which is right next to the Trolley yard. I took a ride out to Santee on the East/Orange Line one day. Here is SD-100 2040 at the Santee terminal. The same train leaving Santee. The finale from San Diego: there's a perspective you don't often get! An train of SD-100s, as taken from the Marriott Hotel next door to the San Diego Convention Center. I was there for a trade show connected with my job. Later that year, the Republican Convention was held at the Convention Center. Up next, a few L. A. pics. |

And now, a few LACMTA Red Line pics:This was taken 5/23/02 at the Red Line shops. I wasn't trespassing, then-SCRTD was holding an Opne House. This was before the Red Line initial segment opened (on 1/30/93). The open house was originally scheduled for 5/2/92, but had to be postponed due to a "minor civil disturbance" that happened in L. A. earlier that week. :) This was taken on the second day of Red Line service, 1/31/93 (I missed the opening day because I was in Palm Springs). 514 is eastbound at 7th St/Metro Center. Yes, I used flash, I didn't know any better back then. No one said anything. This was later the same day, possibly at then-western terminal Westlake/MacArthur Park. I have a sh*tload of Blue Line pics, but it seems I didn't upload them to Photobucket yet. I'll have to track them down and post later. That's it for now! |

OK, haven't found my Blue Line, but here are a few from the opening day of the Green Line. The Green Line opened for service on August 12, 1995 (I think). I had things to do that day and couldn't ride, but later in the afternoon, I was able to drive by some of the stations on the western end (the part not on I-105) and take these pics:This is at the southern (western?) terminal at Marine Ave in Redondo Beach. It is above the now-BNSF Harbor Subdivision ROW. This is a northbound/eastbound car rounding the curve heading into El Segundo station. This is that same car berthed at El Segundo station. If those cars look like Blue Line cars, that's because they were, basically. Originally, the Blue Line was going to be fully automated, since it is entirely grade-separated, but that technology was proving to be too expensive, so at the last minute, LACTC/RTD/MTA ordered 15 cars from Sumitomo/Nippon-Sharyo, who had built 54 identical cars for the Blue Line. (Ironically, 54 cars were ordered back in the late 80s, with the intention of assigning 32 to the Blue Line, and the rest to the Green Line. That's all they thought they would need. But the Blue Line proved to be an immediate hit, so they had to keep all 54 for the Blue Line and order the additional 15 (154-168). For the first few weeks, to accomodate the curious crowds, the Blue Line sent 3 of its cars (100, 126 and 136) to the Green Line, so a few 2-car trains could be operated (indeed when I did first ride on 8/20, it was on a 2-car train). Actually, they didn't have to send them anywhere, as both the Blue and Green lines operated out of Division 11, which is the rail yard by the Long Beach freeway, just north of the 405 freeway and just west of the Blue Line ROW and L. A. River. Eventually, 100/126/136 returned to Blue Line service, and the Green Line used 154-168 until the Siemens P-2000s went into service in 2001 (I think). At that time, 154-168 were assigned to Blue Line service as well, and the P-2000s starting operating out of Division 22 (aka Hawthorne Yard and Shops). |

OK, finally I've gotten some time to post pics from transit "mecca", the San Francisco bay area! :)Starting with Santa Clara VTA: 848 southbound on 1st St (or is it 2nd St?)at Santa Clara St in downtown San Jose in April 1997. 807 northbound on 1st St, north of downtown in September 1997 (my last visit to the bay area) Of course, the 800s are now gone from VTA, replaced by the 900-series low floor cars from (I think) Kinki-Sharyo. Some are in Sacramento (not sure if they are in service yet), while others are at Salt Lake City. |

A car 247 leading a train arriving at Daly City in July 1991. Interior of a "B" car. I think this was at Fremont in July 1992 Up next, my favorite agency, the San Francisco Municipal Railway :) |

Looks like a 2-car train, but is actually 2 single LRVs, parked very close together, outside of the Curtis Green light rail center in April 1997. (Curtis Green was a Muni general manager in the 70s). LRVs are on San Jose Ave, just north of Geneva Ave Mapquest map of location The old and the new: Boeing Vertol 1215 on the left, fairly new Breda 1419 on the right, at the Balboa Park station terminus of the J-Church and K-Ingleside lines, right outside the Green light rail center. Shortly after I took this pic, I rode on 1419 up to Church and Market Sts, the first Breda LRV I ever rode. (the M-Ocean View also serves this location, but it comes north on San Jose, stops a few yards short of Geneva, fumigates, then turns into lower Geneva yard (where much of the Muni historic fleet used on the F-Market & Wharves is stored). Layover is taken in the yard, then the car exits onto Geneva, goes a few yards on Geneva to San Jose, then turns south on San Jose to start the route. The K and M lines meet again at St. Francis circle ( I have a pic of two Boeings at that location taken in June 1996, but I don't seem to have uploaded it to Photbucket yet, I'll try and do that later on). A closer view of 1419, taken at the same time as the previous pic. |

OK, here's that St. Francis circle pic I mentioned:The car on the left is outbound on the K-Ingleside, while the other car is inbound on the M-Ocean View. To the left is West Portal Ave, which leads (appropriately enough) to the west portal of the Twin Peaks tunnel, built in 1917 to take Muni cars under the Twin Peaks to avoid a circuitous route around them. Just before West Portal station, the tracks of the L-Taraval meet up with the K and M. Back to September '97, I was following 1423 down Church St, and got this pic when it was stopped. 1423 turning from Church St onto 30th St, headed to Balboa Park. This was the terminus of the J-Church for many years, until it was extended to Balboa Park in the late 80s or early 90s. In November 1992, a friend and I were in town for the USC-Stanford game (USC lost) :( , and in the morning, we went by the cable car museum, which is above the car barn. After leaving the museum, we walked around the north side, and I saw the entrance to the barn, so I decided to take a pic of the cars inside. Some workers saw us, and invited us in! Not too many places that would happen (and post 9/11, probably not even at Muni) :( Anyway, I got this pic: And then this great pic: Our host said that they had just built this car in the shops! I have seen others post pics of 13 on here in service, but I must say, I was probably to first to actually see it! :) Found a couple more cable car pics, but my time is running out, so I'll post them next time. |

Not too many places that would happen (and post 9/11, probably not even at Muni) :(Last summer, I was driving from Minneapolis to Chicago and decided to stop in Kenosha to take a look at their trolley loop. As soon as I boarded the trolley, the operator saw my camera and proceeded to give me a tour of the car inside and out. He then called his supervisor, who let me into the barn to see the other trolleys: I really can't thank the wonderful employees of Kenosha Transit enough for this. They are truly transit professionals. |

Metro Blue Line pics!Car 125 at 7th St/Metro Center station in early 1991. Later in 1991, a northbound train as seen from the Artesia Blvd overpass, just south of Artesia station. (to get this pic, I had to climb up the embankment, but well worth it. No, I wasn't trespassing, I walked in the area next to the then-Southern Pacific track which is seen to the left of the Blue Line tracks, an area open to the public. Those ties you see by that track were for a spur that SP was about to build that branched off the SP track to a factory just north of the Artesia station parking lot.) And finally, a southbound train approaching 103rd St station in April of 1998. The lead car had been painted in the lousy "yellowjacket" color scheme. I was actually aboard an MTA bus driven by a friend of mine on line 251 (may have been route 252), which laid over by the station. |
