I wrote a few posts back: "In order to make the LCDs bigger, they would have needed to...figure out a way to install them in the blacked out area of the window." The LCDs look to be currently right up against the blacked out area. So without moving into that area, they can not mount them any higher.

I saw one in the morning, Manhattan-Bound local. In the afternoon I decided to wait 2 hours for one. About 12 7 trains passed and I didn't see any with them.

They are LED's.

LED = Light Emitting Diode
LCD = Liquid Crystal Display

LCD's used on the subway are usually backlit.

If you're talking about the ones in front, those are LED's too. They come either in the little round dot shape, or the long bar shape. That's what the old LED clocks used.

Some more photos and an observation.

Leaving the yard

Entering 111th Street

Between cars

Leaving 46th Street

EXPRESS! EXPRESS! EXPRESS!

Compare with LOCAL! LOCAL! LOCAL!

An Express close-up

Here's the observation. When I saw the Express train, (and it certainly was an Express), only the FIRST CAR showed EXP. The rest of the cars (except 1969, of course) had their LCL signs lit.
