As such I can't quite see why the front end destination sign was neccesary. Clearly the MTA agreed, since they eliminated those signs completely.

I guess it could go back to the days when people knew their trains by route or destination rather than number or letter. However, most other systems in the country still have front end destination signs, so some still feel that it serves a purpose.

I think the EXP/LCL lights were even more important and were definitely a mistake to eliminate as it has already come back to haunt them.
