The GG1 was based on the New Haven EP-3, which the Pennsy had borrowed from the New Haven around 1934, when the Pennsy's own design was found to be inadequate. Gibbs' contribution was in designing the massive electrification project itself (catenary, power distribution, etc.). |

The PRR gave designations to each class of locomotive based on its wheel configuration. Articulated locomotives were designated with double letters. Therefore, the GG1 was a 4-6-0+0-6-4 articulated locomotive. It's just a coincidence that the designer's initials were used as the locomotive's designation. |
