Seeking refuge from all the 9/11 crap, and having found exactly $26.50 worth of coins in my living room couch, I thought I'd take a quick run up to that town I so harshly judged last month. Look what I found. I didn't know any Genesis engines had been painted in New Haven RR colors. It looks really good. How about painting the ones owned by New York State in NY Central colors?

Here's a couple of pics of some VERY late NYC-bound Maple Leafs and Ethan Allens. One was 3.5 hours late!!!!

BTW, I rode the LIRR again from LIC to Jamaica, and it was quite "inexpensive", if you know what I mean. I was even with my wife and the woman she works for. She was stunned to see how much easier it would be for her to get her train to Smithtown at LIC then having to backtrack on the E from Lexington Ave to the zoo that is Penn Station during the afternoon rush. I do have one question: would an LIRR conductor honor a Penn Station/Smithtown monthly pass at LIC? I assume so, since both are in the City Terminal Zone.

I caught this switcher-thingy laid up just east of LIC:

Welcome to PO'town by the way ... did you hit the street or did you double back?

And as to the Amtraks being late, that's why they LOVE CSX so much. There's yer culprit. At least the trains out of Rensselaer don't get hosed as often. But if your train is coming from west of Rensselaer, bring a tent and a cooler for the wait. :(

Never left the station, I did not have an umbrella, and the northbound train was late (damned single tracking).

Ah, right ... forgot about the city thing about never walking in the rain. Heh. Folks upstate tend not to carry umbrellas - wind usually gets them, so most of us just get wet. Aside from winter, it can be fun. :)

Havne't been down there in about 15 years, but just went and looked and there still ain't much to do downtown other than walk up to the "Main Mall" (which was once Main Street) which they turned into a pedestrian walkway where the street used to be - used to own a store there. Not much to do THERE either aside from walking around and just checking out the locals. But it'll easily kill a half hour to an hour and it's always humorous taking in another city and appreciating what ya gots "downtown" where you are.

And if you REALLY wanna do it up, grab a bench, pop off a shoe and pick yer toes "French Connection" style. Always useful for future reference HERE to be able to say, "been there, DONE that." :)

For $26.50, you could have also enjoyed one of the best rides on New Jersey Transit, the North Jersey Coast Line to Bay Head, but no, you wanted boring old Metro-North...

Ok, ok, joke's over, serious reply time.

I love those Gennies in that scheme and agree completely that the New York Central scheme would be hot shit on rails. They do have a FL9 in that grey NYC scheme that is very pleasing to look at. If you like that kind of thing, not that there's anything wrong with it.

Fred

The Hudson line is NOT boring. The New Haven is (except it's branches) and so is the Harlem, to a certain extent (at least in 3rd rail country).

NYC colors may not be a bad idea at all. I'm trying to save up some cash so I can purchase some undecorated Genesis locos and place my excess NJT decals on them. I'm also gonna see if Trainworld has any Genies in the NH colors(I only need one since I still use an F7 that I painted in the McGuiness colors).

Umm, the Main Mall was torn up several years ago and is Main Street once again. There also is a small plaza right across from the station heading towards the river and there's a good (for upstate) pizza place a 5 minute walk away.

A ride on the poorly-planned beese there is a joke in itself and is a look into some of the weirder locals. Better do it soon as their decrepit old Gilligs on some of the routes are getting their overdue retirement soon.

I was there when they first filled in Main Street back in the late 70's. Glad to hear they got rid of it, it was a stillbirth from the start. Owned a store there at Main and Vassar called "Recon TV" ... had the street torn up for nearly a year and then no sidewalk at all for about a month. We had our customers "walking the plank" ...

Ah yes, the world of "EmptyView transit" (Mt. View) and those police cars marked "Selective Enforcement." Ah well, at least truth in advertising. Heh.

If you remember Milt's Cigar Store on Market Street, that was owned by my mother-in-law. She is still there occasionally but no longer owns the store. It's also moved several times but it's still on Market Street.

Sure do! Used to buy my smokes there. Small, little inbred world ain't it? :)

Used to take the bus out of there back to where I lived in Zoo Paltz and I remember it being just up the street back when they had the big "Welcome to Poughkeepsie, Progressive Queen City" on the building. There were a lot of interesting little shops downtown, but you had to find them. Most visitors didn't. :(
