Gene Russianoff of the Straphangers Campaign said in a better world, the state would have a cable channel that broadcast meetings of public authorities, agencies and boards into homes. Not every roof has a computer under it, he said.

Heh. I contructed and then operated a state channel called NY-SCAN up here in Smallbany back in 1985 whose express PURPOSE in being was PRECISELY this ... but the cable industry decided to make it go the way of public access and Mario Cuomo, bending to industry pressure, shut it down. Paturkey came along and then threw away several MILLION dollars worth of television equipment that I'd built plus killed the state agency that would have made it all happen.

Rest assured, Gene ... it will *NEVER* happen. The costs of doing it NOWADAYS is beyond insane. I know, I was there ... and I BUILT it! :(

What about the NYS Legislature Channel? (Channel 159 on Time-Warner digital cable). Do they ever carry these meetings?

I have no idea ... that's something that's done by CapitolNews9, TimeWeenie and as far as I know, anyone who wants to feed it has to walk the tape down to Manhattan for it to air. We had our own crews who'd go out and cover it and ran 24 a day with Assembly, Senate, Court of Appeals and agency programming. If NY-SCAN were still around, it'd definitely get aired. Dunno about TimeWarner though.

Not every roof has a TV under it, either.

Russianoff's presumption is, I think, that some people are too poor to have both a TV and a computer. He's quite correct, but I would suggest that, if you can only afford one or the other, a computer is a much better investment than a TV.

Especially with what's on the talking lamp these days. But reality is that a computer is a pretty serious investment still for quite a few people even these days, and there's not many out there lashing up older equipment (PLUS paying a phone bill for them) to do it. Talking lamps *are* cheap by comparison.

And if you still remember dialup, can't DO television on THAT. Hell, breadband sucks especially when you're stuck with the crappy "Flash" and "Real" (ahem) "video" of j00t00b. And I'll also bet that there ain't much WiFi in the PJ's either. :(

The MTA board meetings were on Crosswalks, New York City's cable station, for a while, but not in the past few years. I hope that in addition to streaming, the meetings will be available as files for those of us who won't be around when the meetings happen to watch live.

It'd be NICE if they did them as MPG2 files, and not any of that virus-laden WMV crap ... but then betcha it'll be FLASH or REAL in which case, might as well be "listen for announcements" given the chit quality of the latter. :(

Of course they'll go with WMV - MTA is nothing if not Windows-centric. It just means that I won't be able to watch - none of the new WMV files play on Macs.

And anyone who has a single living braincell shouldn't either - WMV files are one of the LARGEST vectors of nasties aside from the "latest" PDF format. Ah well ... once upon a time I made REAL television possible for them, but the cable industry didn't like the idea of chipping in. Cable isn't profitable ... that was the rap in 1992. :)

But yeah, I'd be the first one lined up to view a good rousing KALIKOW session. NOT! Heh.
