Nice! Next time to the other way on the North London Line from Willesden Junction and pick up Thameslink at West Hampstead (it's at another station a block or two away). Or if you're feeling really ambitious, go to Gospel Oak and ride the GOBLIN.

Thank you!

No one of authority has said anything about my photography. Reactions from staff have included a bus driver posing for us and an Underground driver covering his eyes, thinking I would use the flash.

One civilian (seemed like a crotchety oldtimer) said something like "you have no business taking photos" a few times while he ran out of my shot on the District platform at Gloucester Road. I ignored him.

I know what you did.

If you want a different way to get to Willesden Junction, go to Euston and catch the Watford local (more Silverlink Metro, which means more of that awful Class 313). Just north of Queen's Park (where you join forces with the Bakerloo), don't forget to look out the window, since you pass through a small yard.

Also, if you ever make it to Ealing Broadway, I forgot to mention that lots of locals out of Paddington, including Heathrow Connect (not Heathrow Express!), stop at Ealing Broadway. But I still recommend the Central line in one direction.

Silverlink Metro (consisting of the West London Line, the North London Line, the GOBLIN, and the Watford local) will soon be taken over by TfL and be branded London Overground, along with the extended East London Line.

After discharging at Albert Hall, the bus loops around to Prince Consort Road ("the back") for its layover. Technically, I don't think the conductors are supposed to allow passengers to ride there (due to the British equivalent to ADA), but one or two let me stay on board this summer.

That's exactly the problem. Since only the Routemasters short-turn at Albert Hall, people who can't ride Routemasters can't ride to Prince Consort Road -- which means that nobody can ride to Prince Consort Road.

In the other direction it actually makes a difference, since it's a pretty substantial walk to the first stop at Ennismore Gardens (not Albert Hall!).

1. I was stopped at Victoria Terminal and told to go to the office to get a photo pass. I did and the woman there was very nice. I then walked down one of the platforms and got some nice photos.

2. At the Victoria Underground station (District Line), two plain clothes police officers stopped my wife for taking a photo of a vent above the tracks because she liked how the natural light was shining on the tracks. They were a pain in my butt and made us miss two trains.

The end.

A photo pass for what and from whom (what company)?

And those two plain clothes police officers were in the wrong. Did she eventually get her photo?

(Trains are very frequent in London, so missing two trains isn't a real problem. Unless you needed the Circle line or a particular branch of the District.)

I've read on another forum that GNER may lose their franchise to run the East Coast Mainline.

Probably. The likely contenders for replacement are:

Sea Containers (GNER) - probably impossible as DfT rules forbid insolvent franchisees
Virgin / Stagecoach - best option, but DfT idiots might choose to see a monopoly on London-Scotland travel (when it already effectively exists on the railways - Glasgow is faster from London on Virgin, Edinburgh is faster on GNER; the real competition is with airlines and with National "Express" buses)
National "Express" - this would be the second-to-worst option based on their previous record
First Group - this would be the worst option based on their previous record - unfortunately, their brand of irritating passengers doesn't seem to irritate the DfT
any foreign loonies who think they've learnt from Connex's mistakes - NS, MTR, et cetera.

I seem to remember somewhere that SNCF had applied for open access rights somehwere in Britain in order to get some experience at running trains in the UK. Would they count as foreign loonies?

1. I was stopped at Victoria Terminal and told to go to the office to get a photo pass. I did and the woman there was very nice. I then walked down one of the platforms and got some nice photos.

That's technically unnecessary unless you plan on selling your photos, but seeing as Southern are rather good at misinforming their staff about the rules (and in this case, because it is one of the 17 "major stations"*, this too) it's probably harmless.

* the "major stations" are London Bridge, Cannon St, Charing X, Euston, Fenchurch St (yes, major as in a four-track terminal served by one company - how the hell this crept in (whilst Marylebone rightly did not) I don't know), King's X, Liverpool St, Paddington, Victoria, Waterloo; Birmingham New St (the British version of New York Penn - massively under-capacity, not enough platforms, awful access to platforms, horribly rebuilt in the 1960s, and a tunnel short at the busier end); Edinburgh Waverley; Gatwick Airport (again, slightly silly, trumped only by the silly idea of running four franchises down the Brighton Main Line); Glasgow Central; Leeds City; Liverpool Lime St; and Manchester Piccadilly.

Note the absence of many stations that would be considered major by most people outside Whitehall: Brighton, Bristol Temple Meads, Cardiff Central, Carlisle Citadel, Clapham Junction, Crewe, Exeter St David's, London St Pancras, Newcastle Central, Norwich Thorpe, and so on. Really, the entire term is a political device without any real meaning.

In my opinion, Cannon St and Charing X should be transferred to Southeastern; Euston, Birmingham New St, Liverpool Lime St, and Manchester Piccadilly to Virgin; Fenchurch St to c2c; King's X and Leeds City to GNER (or replacement); Liverpool St to "one"; Paddington to FGW; Waterloo to SWT; Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central to Scotrail; Gatwick Airport to Southern; London Bridge and Victoria split between Southern and Southeastern as they're really two stations each. Network Rail could then be eliminated from running stations.

2. At the Victoria Underground station (District Line), two plain clothes police officers stopped my wife for taking a photo of a vent above the tracks because she liked how the natural light was shining on the tracks. They were a pain in my butt and made us miss two trains.

Oh dear...

Did you get on the Number 49? You could have been The Man on the Clapham Omnibus!

Surely he'd've been a misnomer had he got on the 49? ;-)
