It's vandalism, but it has merit. Look, I understand that some graffiti are "artistic" and were painstakingly drafted. No argument there. But graffiti serve no useful social purpose whatsoever. None. Artistic, or not. Graffiti serve a social purpose, but not the kind decent society wants any part of. I don't understand this fawning admiration for ghetto culture. And that's what graffiti represent. Isn't it every human being's desire to lift themselves as far away from such filth as possible if given the chance? |

The blue stripe would break the monochrome of the stainless steel. I do feel that the cars had a bit more character wearing it than totally bare. The uniform red scheme looked decent, however; probably because the bonnets and anticlimbers were black and the roofs were silver, breaking up the monochrome of red a bit. |

Posted by SilverFox on Wed Oct 4 16:43:02 2006, in response to Re: 7 train tagged in service!, posted by NIMBYkiller on Wed Oct 4 15:10:40 2006. I highly doubt that should a graffiti epidemic return to the subways that it would come with the crime and lack of maitenance that was experienced in the 80s. A graffiti epidemic is the first indication of a lack of maintenance. Subway cars should not be graffiti'd, period. If they are on the road for X hours, days, weeks, months, or years wearing graffiti scrawls, it is the very definition of somebody not paying attention and not caring. It's very difficult to allow one type of maintenance defect (vandalized carbodies) to persist while addressing other maintenance issues, such as brake shoe thickness, bearing lubrication, and motor health. While there might not be a connection between spraypainted carbodies and these other maintenance concerns, suppose cleaning the graffiti off the carbodies weakens the carbodies through excessive scrubbing, washing, sandblasting, or whatever is done to remedy that problem. Pretty soon, you will have rotting carbodies with tip-top running gear. Is that economical? Again, in and of themselves, graffiti are harmless, but as part of the bigger picture, they are the apex of the slippery slope. Give into graffiti, and pretty soon a return to order will be nearly impossible without 100 times the effort than otherwise would have been necessary, as has already been demonstrated. |

You have got it backwards..the blue and silver covered previous distasteful paint schemes covered in dirt, grime, graffiti only to become dirty, grimy, mucky and covered in graffiti itself. The system finally becoming all stainless steel is like a gift from heaven, something the MTA has been after for a long time. The Silver And Blue was nothing more than a makeshift paint scheme matching that of the LIRR M1s. |

I have been through the lowest point in the sorry 1970's and early 80's era of graffiti, super hot cars in the summer, super cold cars in the winter (especially the R27/30s I rode on the M), rampant crime and violence (roving gangs of at least 20-30 punks would go "wilding" in each area, terrorizing innocent customers), and constant breakdowns.I know you won't want that to happen. |
