The Roger williams was a special build set build for New Haven Railroad, it had higher HP engines, 6 cars total with propulsion in both Diesel and third rail mode. They had a traction motor on idler axles and there fore different trucks. they had outside swing hanger trucks to make room for the traction motors. The car Belong to James Gagliardi he managed to save two outside cars and one blind trailer(no controls but with engine) |

Do the RW cars use traction motors?Standard RDCs use a drive shaft and gearbox, to transfer power from the diesels to the inboard axle on each truck. The shaft connects to the engine crank through a torque converter, like the automatic transmission on a car. In addition to the differences Dutch pointed out, the Roger Williams cars had a lower roofline, which is evident when you see one of these cars coupled to a conventional RDC. They also used a single piece car side, as opposed to the more conventional siding on the RDC, which is evident in the two pictures above. With all these changes, it wouldn't surprise me if they did go to an electric transmission, as opposed to the RDC's hydraulic, but I've never seen that mentioned anywhere. |

The cars were stored in Cedar Hill where a few MNCR employees on their own time rebuild these cars for Mr Gagliardi. they were on the old NH airline for a few months to.The last use was for Amtrak on springfield line. |
