S/B timers begin before passing 25 St, so the S/B run is comparatively slower. |

Posted by Howard Fein on Mon May 1 12:49:14 2006, in response to Fastest Runs in the Subway, posted by Subway Camper on Sun Apr 30 01:07:10 2006. With all the long-running weekend GOs, a lot of fast express runs aren't available. There's no West Side express downtown between 96th and 42nd, or in either direction below 14th. Likewise, the East Side is all local below 42nd, and the Joralemon tube- one of the fastest- is closed. As others have mentioned, there's no C next weekend which eliminates many fast A express runs.So what's left? The 2 and 3 express uptown 42-96. The 5 express in either direction 42-125. That the 4 is running local in that stretch should make for a clearer express track. The E and F express in Queens. The R32s often exceed 40 inbound west of 65th and eastbound coming into Continental. Unfortunately, there are many weekends in which one service or the other runs local in one direction or the other for all or part of the segment between Queens Plaza and Forest Hills. This usually goes unmentioned on the cumulative weekend GO advisories. If you're looking for short, fast runs between local stations, there's the 1 between 145-Dyckman; 6 between 51-125 (may be hampered by having to share trackage with the 4); F below 34 in Manhattan and most underground portions in Brooklyn; G through most of Crosstown route; L between Jefferson-Wilson. And if you get to Jersey, the much-maligned HBLR does have a couple of good stretches: On the Tonnelle branch between 9th and Port Imperial, and the Bayonne branch between Danforth and 45th. Good luck! |

The Harrison ↔ JSQ stretch is pretty fast and enjoyable, though the lower speed limit approaching Journal Square eastbound dulls it slightly. On my last trip westbound, the train encountered a lowered smashboard before a drawbridge, so we had to wait before getting the all clear. |

Speeds in that tunnel are generally slow, but the stop at Roosevelt Island doesn't help, either. If you want speed through the 60th Street tunnel, use the N. The R has to slow down for the switch before the portal, but the N goes straight through. |

Metro North has 60mph on track one or 2 in the park avenue tubes. track 4 and 3 have 45mph restrictions. in the bronx on the harlem and New Haven, u may hit 80 between the curve north of the melrose station until before Fordham. Also on the hudson line, after spuyten duyvil until south of tarrytown, u may do 75, except the yonkers curve reducing to 50.THIS IS WHY I AM GLAD I WORK FOR THE RAILROAD. A PLACE WHERE OPERATING BELOW TIMETABLE SPEEDS ARE DECERTIFIABLE OFFENSES. WHICH MEANS IF MAS IS 90, U BETTER BE DOIN 89-90! LOL, none of that hittin the brakin early that sometimes happens in NYCT! dont get me wrong i have had some extreme Motormen and Motorwomen on my F train commutes from the misses place on them overnight jobs in grand central! |

The 63rd St. tunnel is more level than the 60th St. tunnel. If I had to speculate, it's probably because the 63rd St. line itself is much deeper to begin with; hence it doesn't need to dive down to get beneath the riverbed. |

I would agree that the 2/3 from 72nd to Times Square is an interesting and fast run (watch for the reverse curve at 59th St)-this is still running on old style ballasted track unlike the local tracks. The 7 from 61St to Junction Blvd is a fast one but running outdoors doesn't seem as fast as in a tunnel. I've taken the E/F from Roosevelt - Queens Plaza too but with the newer trains it doesn't seem as much fun as it was with the R1-9 cars. However if you are really into fast trains the subway has its limits. You will want to try out the commuter lines (LIRR and MNCR). If you really want a fast train take Amtrak NYP - 30th St. in Philadelphia. Even the regular trains exceed 100 MPH most of the way across New Jersey. I wish I could have had the chance to ride behind a GG1. Amtrak can't go as fast in Connecticut (west of New Haven) because it shares tracks owned by MNCR. |
