Remembering a recent post about the train lengths of the Broadway Bklyn Lines of the late 60's until 1973, please clarify for me:

QJ trains were a max. of 8 cars
M " 6
KK " 6
JJ " 6

Was this only AFTER Chrystie Street opened, or pre 1967, were "JJ" and "M" services (or whatever numbers they were) 8 cars??

Tony

Before Chrystie St, the Jamaica line (#15) had 8 cars rush hours, 6 cars non rush hours, 3 cars late nights. The Chambers-Metropolitan service had 6 car Standards, rush hours only. I'm fairly sure the Broadway Brooklyn local also had 6 cars (R16?), rush hours only.
After Chrystie, until 1973, the train lengths were as you posted above. After 1973, the J, and M's were 8 cars rush hours (and I think non-rush hours as well). I think the K was also 8.

If you go back to the early 1950's there were:

Jamaica Express - 8 car standards @ 11 tph
Bway-Bklyn Local - 6 car standards @ 8 tph
Myrtle-Chambers Exp - 6 car standards @ 7 tph

Interesting, trains on the KK got longer after being cut back to Atlantic Ave. I guess Jamaica Ave/Fulton St. patronage was very poor.

That is an interesting observation!! From what I see, the "KK" only ran on the Jamaica Av leg TO Manhattan during the AM rush hrs making Skip Stops, then via. Local past Eastern Pkway. I guess people baarding the "KK" at the skip stops got the next "QJ" express into Manhattan as soon as possible. Someone once told me that the same held true when the "JJ" ran from 168, it was never heavily used along
the Jamaica Av/ Fulton portion. However, the Jamaica Express was crowded right from 168 all the way into Manhattan!!

BMT standards were used on the Broadway-Brooklyn local as well. Most likely they were six cars long.

I can imagine why those who lived at #14/JJ/KK only skipped stops would want to get a #15/QJ/J train ASAP, to avoid making all those stops above Broadway. That's why I think the current J/Z service pattern is far superior.

In the 1960's until Chrystie, the #14 local was pretty much a crap shoot of 5 and 5 car R16's or Standards.

hile officially called JJ when the QJ began, that Standards held it down like that for about 6 more months until the R-9's invaded in the Spring of 68. I reverse commuted that school year between Woodhaven Blvd and 121 St. I often caught a Bway Bklyn local toward Jamaica around 7:50am, saw a Long Island City-bound Oyster Bay train with P54's around 8:10am, and got an 8 car R27 QJ around 3pm.
