There are different levels of severity. Temple Grandin has autism and is renowned for her study of animals and design of cowpens (I've seen them). A friend of mine is autistic. He has trouble hanging on to jobs and would function best with a "job coach" but he does work (he was a competent computer operator) and finished college. He's married and lives with his wife in a rented house.

In all seriousness, leaving out my rants about the Woman Shortage, it is surprising that your friend is married. I have heard that the behavoiral deficiences associated with autism and Asperger's makes it extremely difficult for people to form romantic relationships.
IIRC, Temple Grandin is unmarried.

You are correct about Grandin.

Yes there are difficulties with forming relationships, but that doesn't mean the autistic person doesn't want anyone at all. They benefit from human contact even though they may not show it as obviously.

Darius McCollum has Asperger's Syndrome and his urge to operate a New York City subway train has gone out of control a few too many times. I'm sure you could ask him anything about the R-32s for example and he would know everything or almost everything about them. SUBWAYMAN mentioned in a post some time ago that he has Asperger's Syndrome himself and I have either Asperger's Syndrome or high fucntioning autism as I distinctly have a number of the characteristics conisitent with an autistic spectrum disorder. I would not be surpirsed that there are others on this message board that have an autistic spectrum disroder.

[I don't think it's autism per say but there is a medical condition called asper something syndrome that effects railbuffs like Darius Mccollum.'s Syndrome]

Yes, Asperger's Disorder (or Syndrome) is a real condition. Find out more at www.aspergers.com and www.aspergerssyndrome.net.

However, Darius McCollum has a much simpler problem known as malicious intent. He claims to be a "railfan" but then he goes out of his way to endanger peoples' lives by operating equipment (e.g. trains, switch machines) without proper training. Real railfans have too much respect for railroads and their employees and passengers to do that.

Darius MccCollum may believe he has the ability to operate trains safely (and he did, in fact, operate the trains almost without incident and without injury, though illegally). If that is the case, he does not meet the definition of malicious intent.

Darius McCollum may certainly have the ability to operate a train safely and he has done so, but he is not authorized to operate a train. It could be likened to someone who knows who to fly an airplane but he doesn't have a pilot's license and certainly not the proper training and the person goes into the cockpit of a Boeing 747 jumbo jet and flies it for the thrill of flying a great big passenger jet airliner. The person might be able to fly it safely, but he could be endangering others since he might not be aware of what to do in case of an emergency. The same apllies for Darius McCollum operting a subway train. He might know all of the signals and the radio code, but if there is an emergency, he has no training about what to do in the event of an emergency. To conclude this, it is a serious hazard when an unauthorized person goes into a motorman's cab to operate a subway train or any other type of equipment where proper training and experience is required.

However, there's that jerk who stole an A train in 1993 and took it on a round trip revenue run. "Give him a job" the papers cried at the time. I believe he's now either dead or in jail.

Could be, lawyers can come up with some serious stretches of the imagination to fool juries. Its a case of planting that seed of doubt.
Then maybe Darius does have aspergers. I once took one of those self tests and I can up with slight symptoms of aspergers with more antisocial leanings.
But then again a self test on the web isn't a prognosis of a professional mental doctor.

Not necessarily unless your friend has the other symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome. Being fixated on 1960s or 1970s Mr. Softee ice cream trucks for example does not necessarily qualify for being affected by Asperger's Syndrome.

I enjoy the "mooing" cow noise produced by the spur gears of the R-1/9s and of course the IRT Low-Vs. I also like the high pitched whistle of the pre WWII subway cars. Those sounds gives one a nostalgic feel of reliving the experience of what the subway was like.
