Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Fri Sep 25 12:38:51 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for September 25 1915 – from The Book of First Runs The BRT Fulton Street El is extended from Grant Avenue to Lefferts Avenue. 1948 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day of streetcar operation in Council Bluffs, Iowa. 1948 – from The Book of Last Runs The Connecticut Company discontinues trolley service in New Haven, Connecticut. 1965 – from The Book of Wrecks A northbound 7th Avenue Express derailed while switching from the express to the local track north of Chambers Street Station. R-17 6580 was badly damaged and removed from service. 2012 – from The Book of First Runs A new free transfer point is opened between the uptown platform of the IRT Lexington Avenue Line and the Broadway-Lafayette Street station of the IND 6th Avenue Line. Provisions for this transfer point were provided for in the 1940 construction of the 6th Avenue Line in the form of unfinished passageways. The Broadway Lafayette station had finished exits to the street where they connected the NB Lexington platform. I don't know if they were ever opened, but they were always there. If you look at the exit on Mulberry just north of Houston, there is original IND tiling on it. The entrance stairways in front of the Puck building were also always there. The stairways to the platforms were tiled and had standard IND light fixtures in them. I think the wide stairway that comes up to the Lexington platform under the beehive was widened, plus room made for the escalator. It looks more like an open IND entrance than just provisions. I transferred there daily in both directions before and after the renovation and watched them build it all. This is unfortunately the only pic I took: |

The Shoreline Trolley Museum was on its own after this date in 1948. The Branford line was still tied into the rest of the system, even service on it had ended the previous year. It may be only trolley museum whose first cars in its collection arrived under their own power. |

"Lefferts Avenue" didn't make any sense but you've explained it.Probably too many people got the one in Brooklyn and the one in Queens confused. Once when I was at Astor Place someone asked me where Lafayette Avenue was. :) |

Lefferts Avenue was re-named Lefferts Boulevard sometime in the 1930's.Signage was slow to change. The 1948 subway maps still lists it as Lefferts Avenue. Actually it was changed in 1917 as reported on May 3 in the Daily Long Island Farmer (which later merged with the Long Island Daily Press). It wasn't changed on TA maps until well after the IND was extended to Lefferts Blvd in 1956 as the map of that year still showed Avenue. The Salomon maps of 1958-1967 only listed Lefferts without a street designation. Lefferts Blvd first appeared on a TA map with Chrystie Street in November 1967. |

The the pre-1956 illuminated indicator signs at 8th Avenue still had "Lefferts Avenue" on them at least into the 1970s, although it was painted over and only the Canarsie destination lit up. |

The “Lefferts Ave” sign was not painted over. It was simply not used. There was a “repeater” indicator in the tower at 8th Ave that would illuminate when the platform sign illuminated. I managed to grab the lens from the repeater before the tower was decommissioned. |
