Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Mon Aug 31 10:13:12 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for August 31 1925 – from The Book of First Runs The first train of “D”Type subway cars enter service on the 4th Avenue Local. The consist is 6000-6001-6002-6003. 1958 – from The Book of Last Runs Service is discontinued on the remaining 1.09 mile section of the 9th Avenue El between 167th Street and 155th Street. The stations at Jerome-Anderson Avenues, Sedgwick Avenue and 155th Street are closed. . 1959 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day for streetcar service in Montreal, Quebec. 1971 – from The Book of First Runs A connecting passageway between the 5th Avenue station of the IRT Flushing Line and the 42nd Street station of the IND 6th Avenue Line is opened. According to some photos I have seen, the Ds had the same type of non illuminated roll signs that the 2500 and up ABs had. The illuminated electric signs we are used to came later. |

I read that they were still in tip-top shape and running like tops. Had it not been for the rapid deliveries of R-32s, the Triplexes migh thave hung around a bit longer. As it was, they were running out of space and the Triplexes became sacrificial lambs. |

Besides the D types, there was another car type that could have been assigned to the Culver and Franklin shuttles, the C types. After the Fulton St el was connected to the IND in 1956s, its main fleet, the C types became redundant. There was though of sending them the Myrtle, but their gap filling side skirts wouldn’t have cleared the stations between Bway and Bridge St and for some reason, no though was given to simply remove the skirts to clear the el stations. However, the Cs would have been a perfect fleet to assign the Franklin freeing up the ABs for use on other BMT lines. Initially, they couldn't have been used on Culver since there was still Culver subway service from Ditmas at the time and there might have been a question about using wooden cars into the underground 9th Ave lower level even though the gate cars ran there for years. Franklin would have been no problem and a few years later the TA tried Qs there but they had trouble with then upgrade towards Fulton and they were soon removed. |

It's a shame they didn't keep some of those Peckham trucks that were used on the Qs while they ran on the Flushing line. But as others here have pointed out, swapping trucks would have meant rewiring the cars. Although they were banned from carrying revenue passengers underground, it would have been interesting to see how the Qs would have responded had they ever run on the I Love Lucy line after the connecting tunnel opened. |
