One is, you never get any readings on what is left after you board your bus or subway. I continually go to OMNY machines to see what's up. And this from someone who has Fair Fares! |

The OMNY screens at the turnstiles and on the buses just turn white and say "GO" when you've paid, but they don't show if you're using a transfer. That's a big decrease in usability compared to the Metrocard readers, which did say "Transfer". |

A good reason for the missing balance on an OMNY card at the time of a tap, is that the individuals at the MTA who are deploying the Tap & Pay fare collection system will enter the system at no cost.So if I happen to ride the transit system at no change, why would I then care to know about a monetary balance to my the MTA employee One Pass? Because there is none, and why it might not be on the MTA radar? |

This same issue affected the implementation of the Metrocard, so why did that one have balance on there? This is a real downside of OMNY. |

On the upside, with OMNY you can check your balance at home. Which is not to say that being able to check as you tap wouldn't be a good idea too. |

If I recall correctly, MetroCards encoded balances on the magnetic strip thus when you swiped it could get that information to display immediately.OMNY works relatively fast on a tap, but the OMNY card is essentially a pre-paid debit card on an internal network; if it allows the transaction based on some trust, that keeps the transaction fast. Think of the fastest authentication you've encountered at any point of sale; nothing is as fast as it is to tap and proceed through the gate. To display a balance, it will hold up the line while it's trying to authenticate live, get a balance, and return it to the display. What would help is a balance reader inside fare control for those who are strictly cash for OMNY wihtout an online account. Then you can tap in and then check the balance after you're through without holding up the line on transaction authentication. |
