Tuscarora Almanac for July 12

2000 – from The Book of First Runs

The first train of R-142 subway cars enter service on the No. 2 7th Avenue Express.
The consist was 6301-6305 and 6306-6310.

By 1964, most of the St Louis 1939 Steinway/WF cars were out of service AFAIK

By 1964, most of the St Louis 1939 Steinway/WF cars were out of service AFAIK

They served the Third Avenue El until 1969 but were still only about 30 years old. There were only 50 of them.

Not so Jim. 5660 and 5689 became work motors for the R-31 Vacuum Cleaner train. The other forty eight cars continued to serve the Third Avenue El until 1969.

You're right, Larry. I didn't word my post right. I meant that they were withdrawn from mainline revenue service.

Why did’t they keep the WF cars on the Bronx 3rd Ave el, after 1969?

Why did’t they keep the WF cars on the Bronx 3rd Ave el, after 1969?

There simply were not enough WF cars to protect the service. The few remaining standard Steinways were almost gone. The museum Lo-V's were placed in service in 1968. This was a stop gap measure.
