Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Tue Jun 30 07:12:21 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for June 30 Milestones – June 30, 1968 was a Sunday. It will be the last full day of operation for the “TT” West End Shuttle. This scrappy little BMT route managed to survive the Chrystie Street tsunami back in November. It would now be replaced by a full time “B” service This will also be the end for the “JJ” Jamaica-Broadway / Brooklyn Local. They will join the ‘NX” and the “RJ” in the Home for Retired Subway Routes. 1906 – from The Book of First Runs The Pennsylvania Railroad begins through train service between Broad Street Terminal in Philadelphia and Cape May, New Jersey using the Delair bridge to cross the Delaware River. 1924 – from The Book of First Runs The 14th Street-Eastern District Line opens between Sixth Avenue in Manhattan and Montrose Avenue in Brooklyn. This line is isolated from the rest of the system. A temporary connection is made between the Bushwick Yard of the Long Island Railroad and the street above subway at Montrose Avenue station. Subway cars were lowered intro the station on a ramp by cable. 1943 – from The Book of Last Runs The New York Central Railroad discontinues service on the Getty Square Branch of the Putnam Division. 1951 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day for streetcar service in Fort Collins, Colorado. 1956 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day in passenger service for the Niagara Class steam locomotives. The final run was made by S-1b 6015 on Train #416 from Indianapolis to Cincinnati. Source: Pinkepank, Jerry A. New York Central Power In Color; Volume 2 By the Numbers: 4000-9820 (2016)(Morning Sun Books 1961 – from The Book of Wrecks A fire broke out on the Newburgh-Beacon ferryboat DUTCHESS while she is laid up at the Newburgh Ferry Terminal. Eighty five firefighters with eight trucks from the Newburgh and New Windsor Fire Departments battle the two alarm blaze. Thanks to their efforts the vessel remained afloat but the upper works were destroyed. As the new bridge would not open for two more years the ferry was given an austere rebuilding and placed back into service. Sources: “Steamboats on the Hudson River” by William H. Ewen Jr (Arcadia Publishing / 2011) The (Newburgh) Evening News, newspaper, July 1, 1961 1966 – from The Book of Last Runs The New York, Susquehanna and Western Railroad discontinues all remaining passenger service beteen Sparta Junction and Susquehanna Transfer, New Jersey. Note: The station at Susquehanna Transfer continued to be served by the Northern Branch trains of the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad until September 30, 1966 . 1993 – from The Book of First Runs This is the first day of revenue operation of the R-110A on the IRT Division. The train was placed in service at the 96 Street Station of the IRT Broadway - 7 Avenue Line as a southbound #2 7th Avenue Express. The consist was (S)8010-9-8-7-6, 8005-4-3-2-1(N). 1996 – from The Book of First Runs A new station known as "CORTLANDT" opens today on the Hudson Line. It is located at MP 38 and has a single island high level platform. It replaces the former stations at CRUGERS and MONTROSE. The first train to stop at CORTLANDT is No 8804 at 6:58 AM. 2007 – from The Book of Last Runs The Staten Island ferryboat THE GOV.HERBERT H LEHMAN ended forty two years of service today with the 10:30 PM departure from Whitehall Street. The vessel was tied up at a shipyard on the Kill Van Kull while work was underway to convert her to a restaurant. The plans never came to fruition though and she was subsequently towed to the Steelways Shipyard in Newburgh, New York and was scrapped. Mr. Stephen Bauman added the following: The Lehman's life was probably extended a couple months because both the Marchi (JJM) and Molinari (GVM) broke down on May 6th. It was also the biggest year for the SI ferry - 25K returning Five Boro Bike Tour riders. 4 boat operation was implemented with the JFK and Spirit of America (SOA), in addition to the abovementioned boats. The Newhouse was the backup and placed in service after the first breakdown. The Lehman was recalled out from mothballs after the second breakdown. It had not been used for one month. You should have seen the smoke belching from its stack, when it was started. The Lehman also had a problem. Its PA system failed. It was fixed and the HHL resumed service. For a time the Lehman was moored at the Steelways Shipyard in Newburgh, NY. There were plans for a possible conversion. However on March 2, 2012 partially sank and was subsequently scrapped. I'm curious as to when the very last TT train ran, and if it continued to operate during the late hours into Monday morning. Ditto for the last JJ train. As a side note, the streetcar system in Fort Collins consisted of three spoke lines that converged at a central location. Each spoke had one car, and they were scheduled to meet at the central location at the same time. |

You will not that I was very careful to say it was the "last ful day of operation. I do not know the exact time the new timetables went into effect. Was is 12:01 AM on July 1? In any event the shuttle service did continue until about 5:30 when the "B" service to Manhattan began. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

B service into 57 began shortly after midnight on Sunday June 30, 1968 marking the end of TT service. I was a BMT Tw/M at the time and there was a trainmaster who was a friend of mine on duty at the 50/6 tower. Although the tower is normally on automatic, the trainmaster placed the machine on manual so that I could line the first B into 57 St. As soon as I lined it, up, I boarded the train and rode it into 57 St. |

Whatever kind of control number it was, the public didn't need to see it, and it never made it into the actual production cars.

Unfortunately I wasn’t much into photography so I missed the opportunity to preserve the memories of such things as the Armstrong manual interlocking machine in Canarsie and the 2 GRS model 2 interlocking machines in the old Tower B in CIYd which I operated as a Tw/M. |

That was supposed to indicate the run number of the train crew something which NYCTA buses have. Other transit systems like CTA also have such an indicator but it didn’t catch on for the NYC subways. |

They should have made the new cars 67' BMT standard size so they could run anywhere on the B division. The BRT/BMT used tricks to make the AB's fit anywhere. The MTA did not use these tricks. The result was the R110B's would not fit everywhere. |
