Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Mon Jun 29 09:57:23 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for June 29 1947 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day of operation for streetcar routes indigenous to the Borough of Manhattan. The Third Avenue Transit Corporation ends service on the Broadway & 145th Street Line and 125th Street Crosstown. A ceremony was held at 125th Street and Seventh Avenue in front of Blumstein’s Department Store. The final run was made by lightweight car 101. Several buses and a horse-car with rubber wheels were on display. This was not the complete end of streetcar service in Manhattan. Several of the Bronx trolley line would continue to operate into the northern section of the borough until August, 1948. The Queensborough Bridge Railway would operate until 1957. 1958 – from The Book of Last Runs The New York Central Railroad discontinues passenger train service of the River Division between West Haverstraw and Albany. Service between Haverstraw and Weehawken will continue until December 1959. Source:”Along the Old West Shore” (Stony Clove & Catskill Mountain Press / 2017) by Mr. John M.Ham 1996 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last full day or service at Crugers (MP37) and Montrose (MP39) stations on the Hudson Line of the Metro-North Railroad. The very last train to serve these stations was No 8803, a Croton to Poughkeepsie Shuttle in the early morning hours of June 30, 1996. There are replaced by a new station called “Cortlandt”. 2003 – from The Book of First Runs The PATH Exchange Place station is Jersey City re-opens after being closed since September 11, 2001. In order to convert the station into a terminal a great deal of reconstruction was involved including the re-boring of Tunnel L (formerly the Penn Pocket). Trains from Newark can arrive and depart from either track while trains from Hoboken can only arrive in Tunnel F (Manhattan bound tube). Accordingly a special operation is in effect. The inbound train from Newark arrives in Tunnel E and becomes the outbound train to Hoboken. The inbound train from Hoboken arrives in Tunnel F and become the outbound train to Newark. The Queensborough Bridge Railway would operate until 1957.You left out the Brooklyn trolleys that ran over the Williamsburg Bridge until December 6, 1948 and the trolleys that ran over the Brooklyn Bridge until March 6, 1950. To be a purist, none of the bridge trolleys actually ran on a Manhattan Street. They all ran directly from a bridge into an off-street terminal without ever entering any part of the Manhattan street grid. |
