Tuscarora Almanac for June 11


1924 – from The Book of First Runs

Lawrence Street station on the BMT Montague Street Line is opened. Service on the line itself had begun four year earlier.


1932 – from The Book of Last Runs

This is the last day of streetcar service in Dedham , Massachusetts.

This is the last day of
streetcar service in Norwood, Massachusetts.




1940 – from The Book of First and Last Runs

Service is discontinued on the 9th Avenue El between 155th Street and South Ferry. Service will continue to operate between 155th Street and 167th Street.


Effective June 12, 1940 two new free transfer points were established. The first was at 155th Street between the remaining section of the Ninth Avenue El and the IND Concourse Line. The second was at
161st Street-River Avenue between the IRT Jerome Avenue Line and the IND Concourse Line. Paper transfers were used at both locations. The transfer point at 155th Street lasted until August 31, 1958 when the remaining section of the Ninth Avenue El was discontinued. The use of paper transfers at 161st Street was discontinued on August 17, 1961 when new escalators were placed in service.



Service is discontinued on the 2nd Avenue Elevated Line between 57th Street and 129th Street Stations.

The last 2nd Ave el train left South Ferry at 11:16PM, June 10th, 1940. It arrived at 129th St at 11:51PM.(Elkeeper)



1960 – from The Book of Last Runs

Service is discontinued on all remaining streetcar lines in Johnstown, PA.


1972 - from The Book of Last Runs

The Iselin, New Jersey station on the Penn Central Northeast Corridor Line is closed. It had become redundant when Metropark station opened several months earlier.


1972 – from The Book of Wrecks

An “F” train of R-38’s hit one of the bumping block east of 179th Street Station. The consist was (n) 3991-90, 4041-40, 3983-82, 4069-68 and 4129-28. Cars 3990 and 3991 were heavily damaged.

Actually, when the 9th Ave El closed S/O 155th St, the service operated between Burnside Av end 155th St for a few years.

Those two cars were on that yard track for quite some time along with R38's 4000-4001 and R40's 4200-4201 which were also wrecked in other mishaps. They were all eventually scrapped. They were clearly visible when traveling along the Belt Parkway towards the Verrazano Bridge.
