Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Fri May 1 08:36:11 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for May 1 1822 – from The Book of First Runs Only Tunnelrat will remember this one Ferry service begins between Hoboken, New Jersey and Barclay Street in Manhattan. Service is provided by the ferryboat HOBOKEN (i). She was built in 1822 and abandoned in 1856. Service on what is approximately the same route is today run by New York Waterways. 1908 – from The Book of First Runs The IRT Brooklyn Main Line is extended from Borough Hall to Atlantic Avenue. 1916 – from The Book of First Runs A new ferry service is established across the Arthur Kill between Carteret, New Jersey and Linoleumville (Rossville), Staten Island. The first run is made by the ferryboat CARTERET. 1920 – from The Book of First Runs The elevated structure on McDonald Avenue is extended from Avenue X to West 8 Street where it joins the Brighton Line. This makes possible through service to Coney Island. Culver trains use the lower level at West 8th Street. 1931 – from The Book of Last Runs Service is discontinued on the Broadway Ferry between Grand Street, Manhattan and Broadway (Brooklyn). This service had been operated by the Williamsburg Ferry Company from 1851 to 1909 and by the City of New York from 1921 to 1931. Cudahy . 1948 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day for streetcar service in Louisville, Kentucky. 1949 – from The Book of First Runs On or about this date the Philadelphia Suburban Transportation Company takes delivery of 14 double ended streamlined trolley cars, numbered 11-24. They are built by the Saint Louis Car Company and thereafter known as the “St.Louis Cars”. 1959 – from The Book of Last Runs On or about this date BU Gate Car 1365 departs Coney Island for a new home at the National Museum of Transport in St. Louis, Missouri. 1365 was built in 1905 by the Jewett Car Company. 1959 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day for streetcar service in Qttawa, Ontario. 2017 – from The Book of First Runs The NYC Ferry service begins operation. The service is sponsored by the New York City Economic Development Corporation EDC). It will be operated by Hornblower Cruises through its subsidiary HNY Ferry Fleet. Service will be based out of Pier 11 (Wall Street) on the East River. The Rockaway Ferry will run to Beach 108th Street in Queens where it will meet connecting shuttle buses. It will include a stop at Brooklyn Army Terminal called Sunset Park. The first run was made by the URBAN JOURNEY which left Beach 108th Street at 5:30 AM. The new service also includes the East River Ferry upriver to East 34th Street. Hornblower has been operating this run on an interim basis for the EDC since about May 2016. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Linoleumville is now (and previously was) Travis, not Rossville. It was renamed during the life of the linoleum factory from 1873 to 1931. |

If it was indeed built in 1920, why does it have that type of construction, very rare for NYC elevated lines? ![]()

A PSC report I have indicates that the parts for the Shell Rd structure were salvaged from certain parts of ENY Yd which were removed during reconstruction. Another non official source had indicated that they were removed from the Fulton St el when it was upgraded to dual contract standards. |

If that steel wasnt strong enough for the Fulton St El, how could it be strong enough for BMT Standards that would run there on the Culver line? I can see why that source would be deemed "unofficial" |
