Re: R1/9.

Most were Westinghouse, many with 4 digits were GE.

Does anyone have a breakdown of the GE car numbers?

Just curious.

No that's not right. The Bergen Cutoff is what made the Westchester Ave branch superfluous.

In this pic you can see the Westchester branch rising above the current 2/5 tracks.

And in this pic you can see the pillars that supported the Bergen Cutoff.

The Bergen Cutoff was actually a branch off the Second Ave El before it merged with the 3rd Ave El and ran on the upper level I believe. When the 2nd Ave El was discontinued they continued running trains from Freeman on 3rd Ave. Why Freeman? I have no idea.

I saw a pic posted here once of how the Bergen cutoff branched off the upper level Westchester Ave branch.

the Bergen cutoff branched off the upper level Westchester Ave branch

Yes. This video shows everything, including the view from the front of a south-bound train that had left Jackson Av as it approaches the Westchester branch interlocking, takes the Westchester branch, then branches off onto the Bergen cutoff.

The Bergen Cutoff is what made the Westchester Ave branch superfluous

I don't know about superfluous, because the two routes did different things. The Bergen Cutoff bypassed the 149 St station, while the rest of the Westchester branch connected to the 149 St station. It seems that both arrangements were useful.

I hadn't seen that video but it confirms what little I know about this. It was built because the original Westchester Ave branch was an at grade crossing and crosses all the 3rd Ave tracks at 149th. You can see in the video that this bypass only crosses the express track, which is a single track descending to 149th St and only operated in the direction of traffic of course. The video also confirms it was 2nd Ave trains that used it. When 2nd Ave was torn down, it continued to be used for 3rd Ave trains in their place. I don't know which trains would've used the Westchester Ave branch, if any.

When the Bergen cutoff was closed in 1946, only 5 five-car Composites ran southbound in the AM Rush. The PM Rush was also ran with 5 Composites. I am assuming that a few more trains operated when the Cutoff was opened in 1916. Does anyone know how many trains operated when it first opened?

The Westchester connection was used from 1904 until the Bergen cutoff was put in service, and afterwards only for equipment moves or for layups. From 1904 to 1905 it was the only connection to Westchester Ave because the el opened before the subway connection at 149th.

Mike: I do have a 1938 time-table which shows trains leaving Freeman Street from 6:28 to 8:34 AM, Monday through Saturday. They ran on a ten minute headway so I would guess about fourteen or so trains.

Thanks, that's what I'd have thought. The Bergen cutoff lasted all of 30 years.

According to an old timer I worked with who started as a C/R on the 2nd Ave el, 2nd Ave expresses ran only 5 car trains due to platform lengths while 3rd Ave expresses were able to run 7 car trains.
