I hadn't seen that video but it confirms what little I know about this. It was built because the original Westchester Ave branch was an at grade crossing and crosses all the 3rd Ave tracks at 149th. You can see in the video that this bypass only crosses the express track, which is a single track descending to 149th St and only operated in the direction of traffic of course. The video also confirms it was 2nd Ave trains that used it. When 2nd Ave was torn down, it continued to be used for 3rd Ave trains in their place. I don't know which trains would've used the Westchester Ave branch, if any. |
