Bay Area’s beloved BART system on brink of collapse as riders vanish and deficits soar

Posted by Orange Blossom Special on Mon Mar 16 17:51:50 2026

Is the headline to the article, which is a waste of time as they blame remote work, and not the needles, dung, and danger of riding the trains which no one wants to take.
There was a good local news SERIES posted here not many years ago about how and why no one wants to take the train. None of it matched this lazy predictable reporting.

It's never crime, drugs, or skells that chase people away from transit, with a reputation that never recovers.

What OBS describes is NOT the subway I regularly use at many hours of the day. Whether going out to music, meals w/friends or medical needs, I rarely encounter annoying issues. It is, however, the case that "rush hour" no longer means crush loading--merely a few standees.
So, unlike many transit systems, BART used to rake in 60%+ farebox recovery--mainly due to distance based fares New Yorkers would not to0lerate on the subway. SF Muni and the rest of our 27 transit agencies farebox ## range from 10 to 20%. Now that BART, as many other systems, is booking more evening and weekend ridership than before covid, but lower 9-5 users, their money ## are very different.
Finally, I would point out that Illinois passed a huge bailout for ALL transit in the state as they, too, have very different rider needs than pre covid.

No matter where, it's the same reasons.

As likely other communities. Even before COVID, fewer people were working the traditional 9-5 workday and that only accelerated with COVID. With the global economy, people are often needed to work non-traditional hours to cater in many cases to people outside the US for many things.

Well, 9 to 5 doesn't exist anymore like Sunday blue laws don't exist. So no one is working traditional 9-5 anymore.

As for overcrowding, if you can't handle capacity, no one wants it.

The hallway in the 7 year out of date video was walled off to be filled with a new transformer. Another example of a once convenient piece of a subway station closed off rather than cleaned up and regularly patrolled. Of course in a society where we don't adequately tax the overly rich, there is no money after all of the patronage payouts for things that actually benefit the citizenry at large. As to addict behavior, if we truly cared, there would be rehab/support adequate to the need. We clearly prefer to merely confine them to ever uglier areas of our cities as if they were not fellow humans.
Back to rivet counting.

mainly due to distance-based fares New Yorkers would not tolerate on the subway

There are always criminals in transit, as in any big city. It never stopped the growth of ridership before.

Because of the outrage stoked by the recent increase in the subway fare of a mere 10 cents.

Exactly on 9 to 5.

That was already changing pre-COVID and had been for almost 20 years.

I read that the new BART fare gates have really cut down on fare evasion and antisocial behavior in the past two years. It was really good to hear.

Most fare evaders don't cause problems for other riders, but nearly every problem rider evades the fare, so it really cuts down on both problems.

The new gates have eliminated the slip under and leap over crowd. The squeeze behind a legit entry/exit folks are still out there.
