The final run is made by the ferryboat UNION (ii). The UNION was built in 1862. She was destroyed by fire in 1929. Source: “Over & Back” (Fordham University Press / 1990) by Mr. Brian J. Cudahy 1929 – from The Book of Frist Runs The Pennsylvania Railroad begins a new ferry service between Exchange Place in Jersey City and Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. It is known as the “Atlantic Annex Ferry”. The inaugural run is made by the ferryboat NEW BRUNSWICK (ii). 1969 – from The Book of First Runs Jersey Arrow I railcars are tested on the Muskingham Electric Railroad in Ohio. The railroad hauls coal between the mine and the breakers. The Jersey Arrow I’s were a group of thirty five electric multiple unit railcars. They were built by the Saint Louis Car Division of General Steel Industries. The original roster numbers were 100-134. They were classed by the PRR as MP-85 and later by the Penn Central as MA-1A. BB Washington Heights – 6th Avenue Local Time Period: October 1967 The “BB” was in service from December 1940 to November 1967. This was a service period of almost twenty seven years. “BB” trains always ran between 168th Street-Broadway and 34th Street-6th Avenue. During the 1960’s service only operated during the rush hours while the “AA” ran during non-rush hours. “BB” trains ran with eight cars and used Yellow-Green marker lights. Arnines were the usual equipment but every now and then an R-10 would show up. The last day of “BB” service was Friday, November 24, 1967. Beginning on Monday, November 27 the “BB” service would be covered by a new route, the “B” Washington Heights-6th Avenue-West End Express. I think I saw a BB train once, but never rode on one. I do remember seeing a CC train for the first time in July of 1967 and thought, how many local trains are there on the IND? By then, I was already famliar with the AA. Of course, the subway was still new to me then, and I hadn't learned when such-and-such a train operated. |

What I never understood was why they went from AA to BB and CC at rush hours. Why not just add the DD, from BPB to 34th in rush hours? No signs to change, less confusion as the AA runs 24/7. How many people getting on in midtown or downtown cared what the northern terminal was? If they were going to the Bronx they'd get on the D express, likewise the A for Wash Hghts. |

I have the answer which I got from then old timers in the schedule office. When 6th Ave opened in 1940 the IND supt wanted to operate the resurrected AA as a 24/7 service and operate the concourse local as a DD in rish hours with the D running as the Concourse express. Someone higher up opted for retaining the CC as a rush hour only service with a Wash Hts lcl the BB running during rush hours the pattern which subsisted for years even into the post Chrystie days when the BB became the B. As a side note, the C was retained as a rush hour only Concourse 8th Ave express operating alternately with the D service until after WWII when the C as an express was dropped. |

I just thought of something: the only time there were 8th Ave. and 6th Ave. service patterns operating on both north IND branches at the same time was during rush hours. During non-rush hours, it was the same as today: 8th Ave. to Wash. Heights and 6th Ave. to the Bronx. |
