Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Tue Jan 13 09:18:57 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for January 13 and a Train of the Week 1946 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day of streetcar service in Newport News, Virginia. 1956 – from The Book of Last Runs No. 7 Flushing Super Express service during the PM rush is discontinued. Service during the AM rush will last until December 14. 1980 – from The Book of Service Changes New Schedules for the IRT Division went into effect on January 13, 1980. The most notable feature is the discontinuance of late night express service on the Lexington Avenue Line. No. 4 trains will make all local stops. No. 6 trains will now operate as shuttles between Pelham Bay Park and 125th Street. Trains will arrive and depart at the lower level platform and northbound trains will wrong rail through the river tunnel to 3rd Avenue in The Bronx. (This differs from the earlier 1930’s shuttle which turned back at 110th Street). All No.5 trains from either Dyre Avenue or East 241st Street will now operate as Thru-Expresses in The Bronx during rush hours in the direction of traffic. Midday No. 6 Pelham Bay Park trains will now run express on the Pelham Line in The Bronx. Express service will operate southbound from about 6:30 AM to 12:30 PM and northbound from 12:30 PM to 7 PM. Source: New York Division Bulletin / December 1979 1981 – from The Book of Wrecks Years of deferred maintenance, poor management and municipal neglect finally caught up with the New York subway system today. 2,117 subway cars could not answer the call to service being laid up for repairs. That was nearly one out of three. It would take several years and a lot of hard work before the subway system would climb out of the pit. Source: “New York Subways” (John Hopkins University Press /1997) by Mr. Gene Sansone. 1986 – from The Book of First Runs The first train of overhauled R-26 cars painted in the "Redbird II" scheme enters service today on the No. 2 7th Avenue Express. The consist is (s) 7796-7803-7799-7790-7768-7777-7793-7782-7785-7794. 2001 – from The Book of First Runs The first revenue train operates through the 63rd Street Connection between 21st Street - Queensbridge and the IND Queens Line. It is the 2343 "E" train from the World Trade Center. The consist is (n) 3517-6, 3718-9, 3839-8, 3723-2 and 3833-2. Source: New York Division Bulletin /February 2001, article by Mr. Subutay Musluoglu Tuscarora Train of the Week No. 3 > New York City Transit Authority IND Division Rt. DD Grand Concourse – 8th Avenue – Culver Local Time Period: December 1962 The DD Grand Concourse-8th Avenue-Culver ran for a little more than two weeks from December 7 to December 24, 1962. Service ran between 205th Street and Coney Island during the rush hours. Trains ran local via the IND Concourse and 8th Avenue lines to West 4th Street. The route than followed the Houston Street line and the Rutgers Street tunnel to Brooklyn and then over the Culver line to Coney Island. The trains were identified as “DD” 6th Avenue Local even though they never operated on Sixth Avenue. There was a water main break at 18th Street and Sixth Avenue in the early hours of December 7, 1962. The flooding was extensive and lead to the closing of IND 6th Avenue line between 34th Street and West 4th Street. Several subway lines were affected and emergency services put into effect. “D” trains would continue to run between 205th Street and Coney Island but via the former BMT Culver Line in Brooklyn but would only run during the non-rush hours. The “DD” would run during rush hours. Both services would use the local tracks of the 8th Avenue line between 59th Street and West 4th Street. “DD” trains ran with ten car consists of R-1/9’s. Church Avenue short turns carried Yellow-White markers will Coney Island trains carried Green-Yellow lights. Normal service was restored in time for Christmas on December 24, 1962. This was the first and only time that a “DD’ train ever ran on the transit system. I would have tweaked that water main break pattern thusly, given the fact that the only way to get to Coney Island on the IND was via 8th Ave:A - unchanged AA - 168th St. - Hudson Terminal, rush hours BB - 168th St. - 34th St. 6th Ave., non-rush hours C - 205th St. - -Coney Island, non-rush hours, express between 145th St. and 59th St., via Houston St. and Rutgers tunnel. CC - Bedford Park Blvd - Coney Island, rush hours, via Houston St. and Rutgers tunnel D - 205th St. - 34th St. 6th Ave., rush hours, express in Bronx peak direction, express in Manhattan between 145th St. and 59th St. E - unchanged F - 179th St. - 34th St. 6th Ave., all times GG - unchanged HH - unchanged |

Why not just have the C full time, express peak direction in the Bronx, and the DD the rush hour local BPB - 34th?For that matter, why not have the AA all times and the DD as the rush hour extra as the normal routes, instead of the BB/CC switch for rush hours? How many people were really riding through on the local to either northern branch anyway? |

I would have done it that way since even though the TA management at the time was head and shoulders above what is there now, they were still incapable of thinking outside the box and as a result mislabeled the trains. |

The R26 and R28 cars were all mated to their original mates after GOH. Their H2CA couplers were replaced by link bars. None of these cars were ever retired due to a wreck nor were any of the R33WF and R36WF cars. |

IIRC in the mid 70s an R36WF car was severely damaged when a ventilation shaft/duct work fell in on a door as a Flushing bound train was passing thru the Steinway tunnel. The fallen object crushed thru a door leaf of the first car as the train was passing over the switches under 1st Ave. The poor soul that was standing against that particular door leaf was killed in the incident. |

That was GE car 9759. It was subsequently repaired and returned to service. There was another incident which involved two WH cars which were also repaired. |
