In LA one of the very few examples of legitimate considerate behavior are people opening emergency exits and holding them open for fellow riders. It's become so normal at many stations to use the emergency exits instead of the fare gates. Especially stations with the new, taller gates that are harder to get through.LA removed emergency exits at two stations. The idea is the new gates can be used as emergency exits. They fail open with in the case of a power disruption. |

The formerly great Q53 dropped me off there on my way to school. But this happened at many stations across the city. I see it all the time. But not at Beach 105th |

The action itself might be described as antisocial and perhaps even uncivilized, but the intent of many of the people opening and holding the gates for others is altruistic. I believe that many think that not only are they doing nothing wrong, but they are being helpful. I can't speak for NYC, but that's how normalized fare evasion has become in LA.My main point though is the potential replacement of emergency exits by the new gates. If it works in LA, could you see NYCT doing similar? |

And that 40% is a tiny percentage of their earnings/net worth. Warren Buffet pointed out that his secretary paid more actual income tax than he did.So when the one way fare hits $3 that will be 10x jan 70. If you were employed then (I worked at a bookstore on St Marks) and still in the same trade, has your hourly jumped by the same factor? |

That's because she probably had more income than him. Your issue isn't that taxes are too low, it's that there are no wealth taxes. And yet now there's a movement to eliminate property taxes. SMH. https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MEPAINUSA646N It only goes back to 1974, but NOMINAL median personal income has increased by 846%. With the fare having been 35 cents at the time, it should be $2.96, so seems reasonable. |
