My wife and I have a friend who has definite mobility issues and minor cognitive issues (not serious, but she gets a bit confused sometimes), and yes she definitely had trouble setting up her OMNY card and needed some help. |

Remember when the metrocard was introduced? I think that caused even more riders to be upset. It's just part of change. Some won't handle it well. |

I've called like three or four times and I cannot get a comprehendible answer from anybody because I don't think the people that work there, even know.”I was wondering about this. If I'm tapping all the time but then it just so happens that I reach a 13th ride in any 7-day period (but I was tapping before the 7-day period started) will the capping mechanism kick in or do I have to wait for something to reset? Example: I tap once on a Monday, I then tap 12 times from Tuesday to the next Monday - do those second Monday taps count as a fresh slate instead of being part of the cap I wanted to start on Tuesday? |

I don't know the answer but I would think that every 7-day period starts on the day of the first tap after the previous seven day period. If so, that first Monday counts. |

It starts the first time you use OMNY and then that period is fixed until it ends.So if the first time you ever use it is a Thursday, it ends on Wednesday and that's that. Then it starts again the next time you use it after that Wednesday. So as an example, if you start using it on 1/1, and don't hit 13 rides on or before 1/7, a new period will start on 1/8, unless you don't use it that day, then it will start the first time you use it again. If you get 13 rides total between 1/5 and 1/10, since that's broken into two periods, no cap for you. |

My question is what does an occasional subway rider (like me once or twice a year when in town visiting) do ? In the soon to be old days, I'd buy a single ride metro-card and be on my way. NO can do no more after Jan 1 I understand. |

A single ride has no fee but costs $3.25. I don't know what it will be when the fare goes up to $3 on 1/1.The fee for a regular OMNY is $1, same as the MetroCard. I've never used one. |

That's what I said.Regarding your other post, there is another way to do it but it's much worse. They could pick a day, Monday for example, to start every 7 day period for everyone. Seniors would be less confused that way but it's definitely worse. |

The website says $3.50 on Jan. 4 for a single ride but will that ticket still exist if MetroCard isn't being sold? I get the sense that this fare was published with an eye toward fare hikes in 2025, not in 2026 after MetroCard "retired." |

I don't understand that. I presume that on the 12th tap in 7 days it knows about the previous 11 so it only charges $2 instead of $3 (as of January). Why can't it just always "know" about everything you've done in the last 7 days (whichever days those may be) and just charge accordingly? |

Because it wouldn't know what your fare should be or was.In your initial example you wanted it to be smart enough to know not to count that first Monday and instead start the clock when your riding became more frequent. In that case it wouldn't know what to charge you for Monday until potentially 7 days later. |

But that’s not how it keeps track. If you go to the website it tells you how many times you used it since the start of the 7 day period, not “last seven days.” Besides, for people who consistently hit the cap, why would it matter? |

It knows right away what to charge for Monday because I'm not hitting a cap that day. Full fare. All it has to do is check each time I tap whether I've hit a cap over the last 7 days. It's sad that they're making it more complicated than that. They're already logging ride history. So it's just one question about the log - has this device paid $35 in the last 7 days? Ok, then no charge. |

I don't see why it must keep track that way. What's wrong with "last 7 days?" It's hard to believe that in 2025 the software can keep track one way but not the other. It's an added task to work out or find out when your period started.I'm an irregular rider. I have spurts of 3 or 4 rides per day, 1 ride another day, a couple of days of no rides, etc. I rarely hit the cap but I always still thought "no rider will pay more than $35 in a week" as the fare change information page reads. That's really a lie it turns out. London just charges you at the end of every day, but I think that's more because there are zones and distance-fares involved. New York should be even simpler than that. Each tap should just charge you the lesser of ($3) or ($35 minus what you paid in the last 7 days). I'm not a programmer but it doesn't sound like a huge leap. |
