Tuscarora Almanac for October 18 |
|
Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Sat Oct 18 09:17:02 2025 Tuscarora Almanac for October 18 1920 – from The Book of Last Runs The elevated El car shuttles on the Canarsie line between Rockaway Parkway station and the Canarise Pier are discontinued. Service along the former right-of-way will now be provided by trolley cars. 1967 – from The Book of Wrecks The Long Island Railroad’s only two RDC’s collided with a loaded sand truck in Holtsville, NY. The engineer, Mr. Patsy Molese was killed. The lead car, no. 3101 was badly damaged and eventually scrapped. The second car, no. 3121 was sold to the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. 1999 – from The Book of First Runs The Franklin Avenue Shuttle re-opens for service after being closed since July 1998 for reconstruction. The first train is run for the media with R-68’s 2921-2920. Regular service begins just after 10 AM with the above train and R-68’s 2922-2923. Source: New York Division Bulletin /December 1999 Personal Note: The late Mr. Doug Diamond aka BMT Man was very interested in the re-building of the Franklin Avenue Shuttle. He provided us with frequent updates on the old Sub-Talk Bulletin Board. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Franklin Ave Shuttle |

What they should have done was re-build it at least to Botanic Garden with 600' platforms that could allow for the (Q) in an emergency or G.O. that prevents it from going to Manhattan to reach there to transfer to the 2/3/4/5,I still would look at doing that and perhaps longer-term rebuild to two tracks with Franklin Avenue becoming two levels (I didn't realize previously until I saw photos north of the old Dean Street station that Franklin Avenue had been long a single track station). That as noted before would be part of a much longer-term plan to connect the existing Franklin Shuttle to the existing Myrtle Avenue EL (including a rebuild of the upper level of Myrtle Avenue) that would stops in between Myrtle-Broadway and the Franklin Avenue stops at Myrtle-Franklin and Tompkins-Marcy Avenue (transfer to the (G)) in a partial rebuild of the old Myrtle EL to connect the two lines. Such as noted before would be a "Black (V)" to Coney Island that would be a 24/7 local on Brighton. |

And 26 years later the same dedicated cars are still running on it, and will be for at least another 4-5 years. And they weren't new when they started either. |
