Tuscarora Almanac for September 12

Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Fri Sep 12 13:04:45 2025

Tuscarora Almanac for September 12

1963 – from The Book of Wrecks

A small single engine passenger plane crashes into the Coney Island Yard. The pilot had already bailed out and the plane crashed into an open area in the yard.

Ed. Note: There is never a dull day in Brooklyn.

1971 – from The Book of Last Runs

This will be the last day of operation for Palisades Amusement Park located in Fort Lee, New Jersey. The park sat on a nearly forty acre site high atop the Palisades. The park featured a narrow gauge railroad and a monorail as well as the “Cyclone” roller coaster.

Thanks to Steve B-8 Av Exp for bringing this to our attention.

Palisades brought down one of the Mini-rail lines from Expo 67 from Monrtreal for its final few seasons. We didn't go there after 1968, so I never saw that myself.

I'll always remember the distinct, sweet smell from Palisades Park, and the disgusting smell of boiled peanuts (same with Flemington, N.J. BR&W railroad station).

I wonder what airport the single engine plane flew out of?

It becane a victim of its own success. I remember the radio and TV jingles that urged the public to, "Come on over!" and man, did they ever! The few times when we went there, it was an adventure trying to find a spot to park our car.
