Looks as if the controls are installed IND-style. And faucet handle door controls.:)

Although the Zephyr and Green Hornet had the controls BMT style with left handed brake valves, the production Multis had IND style controls with right handed brake valves. I suspect that was done because operating a self lapping brake valve like the ME-39 is a bit awkward if installed left handed. The faucet handle door controls on the Multis were quite unique. The single handle in the lower middle opened the entire train like the opening button on the steels. The C/R would move the opening handle off the center position to open the doors and the handle would spring back to center. The C/R would operate the closing handles the same way. To close the doors left of the C/R position the C/R would move the handle to the left. To close the doors to the right, the C/R would move the handle to the right and in both cases, the handles would spring pack to the center position. Effectively those handles were nothing more than long buttons that moved to the right and left instead of being pushed in. You’ll notice in the rear of the cab just to the right of the cab door there is a box with a small handle on top. That is a drum switch much like the drum switches on the R types that needed a key to unlock but with only 2 positions, off and on. With the drum switch in the on position, the door controls in that cab were activated. There was no “thru” position on the drum switches because for some reason instead of putting the door control circuit in the electric portions of the couplers, the BMT chose to use door jumpers like the D types.

An interesting aspect of the Multis is that although the cabs were convertible from corner to full width (transverse) most of the time they were operated with the cabs transverse. I have an instruction sheet for the Multis but I don’t know whether it was issued by the BMT ot the B of T since the letterhead is missing. The instructions, however indicate that only the cab at the C/R position was to be kept transverse, but all other cabs were to be in the corner configuration because in the off side of the cabs there was a passenger seat. When I asked M/M about that he told me that “they” wanted the cabs to be kept transverse. I never did figure out who “they” who wanted the crews to violate the instructions were. When I was still working for the TA I came across a similar situation in which a supt told me that “they” told the supervisors to go easy on a particular operating rule. As a mgr myself, my take on something like that is that if “they” didn’t put it in writing, then “they” never said it.

Didn't the BMT standards have jumpers installed when they were modified for MUDC? IINM the Triplexes had internal door controls that did not trainline as well as external controls that did.
