CTA CARS ARE 100 YEARS OLD! |
|
Posted by ChicagoPCCLCars on Mon Jul 7 21:58:51 2025 The CTA HERITAGE FLEET included the Cincinnati Cars which are celebrating their 100th birthday. 4000s are old, but they still can give rides on the Loop. They were joined by four 2400 series cars. Locations...North Ave going home....Welington Ave, going to the Loop. David Harrison |

We have two types.....DC and AC. There are 4000 series, Cincinnati Cars, only two left. PCC, 6000 series, two operational. High performance, 2000's, 2200,s, 2400's, all retired. 2600's, 3200,s still running. All are DCAC includes 5000's Bombardier and CRRC 7000 's. AC's cannot train together. Except the 4000's, all have Ohio Form #5 couplers so they can couple, but not train-lined. 2600's and 3200's run together on Blue, Brown lines. David Harrison. |

Music to my ears. I could always tell them apart from the 6000s when they'd go my grandmother's apartment in Edgewater by the sound of the motors, plus they clanked more than the 6000s.I remember saying to my aunt how cool it would be to ride on an Evanston Express, to which she replied, "It doesn't stop anywhere!" Back in those days, Evanston Expresses ran nonstop between Howard and Merchandise Mart. The 4000s, specifically the Plushies, became popular with trolley museums because they came ready-to-run, so to speak, with trolley poles. A pity that Shoreline wasn't able to reassemble 4280 after they got it. It still looked great back in 1980, but the last time I saw it in 2002, it looked pretty rough. Although I never rode on them in Chicago, I have ridden on the ones at IRM. They can gallop on the mainline; their gears often reach A-440. |
